Larchmont was formally incorporated in September, 1891.
By the early twentieth century, Larchmont was particularly exciting
�. with its grand summer "cottages," great restaurants, important
... ...- clubs, interesting people, and beautiful vistas of Long Island
Sound. It was the "place to be," especially in the summertime, and
1 , especially if you were involved in the theater. Indeed, many stage

The great scenes and exciting activity that made Larchmont
Horseshoe Harbor. Circa 1905. special were memorialized on many picture postcards which have
survived to tell us about "The Way It Was." Although the old
country restaurants are gone and the horse-drawn trolley from the
railroad station down Larchmont Avenue is no more, most of the
buildings and places shown in the postcards are still standing and,
• "3' - ,R {- - even with the changes that have been made to some of them, can
*� _ -- ` be easily recognized. The grand homes, the great clubs, the
• 'l..`� t , . , - exciting waterfront, the commercial buildings, and the schools, are
�`"i ., >; all still here. It is interesting to see how they have changed - and
,' how they have not.
.k Larchmont developed particularly because of its easy
° proximity to New York City, its convenient rail line, lovely
°° waterfront and fine hotels. Today, the Village continues to be an
attractive and active community with a diverse population. 1991
. ,f is the Centennial of its incorporation.

The horsecar railway carried summer residents from the railroad station down
Larchmont Avenue to Cedar Avenue until 1899 when it was discontinued.
