HomeMy WebLinkAbout2023_04_18 Recreation Commission Minutes TOWN OF MAMARONECK RECREATION COMMISSION MEETING MINUTES April 18, 2023 PRESENT: James Druker, Chairman Darren Moss Susan Sigel Brian Welsh EXCUSED: Graham Gutter William Paonessa ALSO PRESENT: Jill Fisher, Superintendent of Recreation Jeffery King, Town Board Liaison Eileen Puleo, Commission Secretary CALL TO ORDER: The meeting held at the Senior Center; 1288 Boston Post Road was called to order at 7:00 P.M. by Chairman Druker. ACCEPTANCE OF MEETING MINUTES: On a motion by Chairman Druker, seconded by Commissioner Sigel, the Meeting Minutes of March 14, 2023, were unanimously approved as amended. RESOLUTION TO THE TOWN BOARD REGARDING SMOKING ON TOWN PROPERTY: Ms. Fisher reported that she provided Town Administrator, Meredith Robson, with the approved resolution in favor of banning smoking of any kind in any Town of Mamaroneck Recreation park, field, or facility. Mr. Jeffery King, Town Board Liaison, confirmed this resolution was provided to the Town Board. SUPERINTENDENT'S UPDATE: Ms. Fisher reported the following: 1 . Program registration for summer programs and camps has begun. Current camp enrollment numbers are as follows: • Hommocks Camp — 156 • Camp Rockingstone — 35 • Teen Travel Camp — 75 2. The Memorial Park Tennis Courts opened for the season on Saturday, April 1st Spring tennis programs began the week of April 10th. Current tennis enrollment numbers are as follows: • Youth — 75 • Adult - 67 3. Landtek performed the annual spring maintenance on Wednesday, March 29th The first scheduled use of the fields was April 11th 4. A copy of the April Newsletter was enclosed for review. Included in this are the dates for the summer concerts and movies. 5. The 5K Run & Lil' Bunny Hop is scheduled for Sunday, April 23rd. Current registration numbers are as follows: • 5K Run — 188 • Lil' Bunny Hop — 193 Town of Mamaroneck Recreation Commission Meeting Minutes April 18, 2023 - Page 2 SUPERINTENDENT'S UPDATE CONTINTUED: 6. Registration numbers for the following Spring Hockey programs were reported: • Spring Hockey Skills Clinic — 59 • Pond Hockey League — 24 7. The Ice Breaker Tournament is scheduled for April 27th — 30th. The tournament is fully enrolled with 14 teams. A copy of the schedule and rules were enclosed. Chairman Druker shared a thank you letter that was received from Ms. Erin May thanking everyone involved for adjusting the schedule for the women's team, The Mother Pucker's, to participate this year. 8. The Senior Center Newsletter and Calendar of Events were enclosed for review. 9. The Hommocks Park Ice Rink hosted a skate with the Easter Bunny on Saturday, April 1st. Photos were enclosed. 10.Session 5 of Skating School concludes on April 30th with an enrollment of 313. There is one more session which begins on May 5th 11.A copy of the Hommocks Park Ice Rink March 2023 General Public Attendance numbers was enclosed for review. 12.The Town signed a Consult and Service Agreement with Woodard and Curran to conduct a feasibility study on the Carpino-Steffen Fields. On Monday, April 10th field boring samples were taken in several locations within the playing fields. 13.The bid for grass cutting services was awarded to P.A. Ferraro Landscaping. Mr. Ferraro has previously held the contract for these services, and we are pleased with his work. 14.We will be participating again this year in the Mamaroneck High School Internship Program. We will have three high school seniors interning with the Recreation Department from May 8th — June 13th 15.The Memorial Park playground is progressing nicely. Photos were enclosed for review. 16.A local Eagle Scout, Quinn Cox is currently conducting a fundraiser to provide a bench to be placed at the bocce court at the Senior Center. In addition, he will be cleaning and restoring the bocce court. The Town Highway Department will be overseeing this project. 17.We are still on schedule for additional Senior Center renovations to begin this fall. The Yellow Meeting Room, front porch, and hallways will all be updated. 18.Dave Andrews and Michelle Ballantyne are working on a landscaping improvement project outside of the ice rink. Photos were enclosed for review. 19.The WestRock Warhogs have agreed to our summer fee structure. Matt Angst is working with them to create a summer schedule. 20.Chairman Druker requested an expense/revenue report for the Hommocks Park Ice Rink. Chairman Druker reviewed the report with the Commission as revenue is up this year. Ms. Fisher was asked to share the report with the Commission. REQUEST TO PURCHASE NEW TELEVISIONS FOR THE HOMMOCKS PARK ICE RINK: A request was made to replace the current TVs located within the Hommocks Park Ice Rink arena with larger ones. The current TVs are 55" and it has been requested to replace these with 85" TVs that would fit just within the existing beams of the ice rink walls. The total cost for this project including purchase of the 2 TVs with mounts, installation, and required electrical upgrades is approximately $5,700. The expense of the project would be covered using funds from the Hommocks Park Ice Rink Trust Fund. The Trust Fund Account has a current balance of$61,344. After further discussion, on a motion by Chairman Druker, seconded by Commissioner Welsh, the Commission unanimously approved this request. Town of Mamaroneck Recreation Commission Meeting Minutes April 18, 2023 - Page 3 FACILITY REQUEST FOR USE OF THE CARPINO-STEFFENS FIELDS: A facility request for use of the Carpino-Steffens Fields was submitted from Mr. Eric Greenberg, E-LAX Training for usage of the fields on August 28th — 31st, 9:00am — Noon. Mr. Greenberg was granted approval for the same use last year without incident. Ms. Fisher recommends approving this request and at the same hourly rental fee as last year. On a motion by Chairman Druker, seconded by Commissioner Sigel, the Commission unanimously approved this request. TOWN BOARD LIAISON, MR. JEFFERY KING UPDATE: Mr. King updated the Recreation Commission on the Field for Kids study on the Carpino-Steffens Fields. Mr. King has not seen the survey results but reported hearing that the findings were favorable. Commissioner Moss asked if the Town Board has taken parking, lighting, and spectator stands into consideration. Mr. King reported that this will all be taken into consideration. Chairman Druker has requested that the Recreation Commission be included at the presentation of the study results and to be involved in the decision-making process for the Carpino-Steffens Fields. ADJOURNMENT: There being no further business to come before the Commission, on a motion by Chairman Druker, seconded by Commissioner Welsh, the meeting adjourned at 7:40 P.M.
