COMMITTEE HELD TUESDAY, NOVIIMBER 24, 1992 IN THE SENIOR CENTER OF THE
TOWN CENTER, 740 WEST BOSTON POST ROAD, MAMARCNIECK, NY
PRESENT: David Lobl, Chairman
Deirdre Black
Camille Odierna
Richard Mari
Pincus Leitner
ALSO PRESENT Stephen V. Altieri, Town Administrator
Lieutenant Anderson, Police Department
ABSENT: Rosemarie Magazino
The Chairman called the meeting to order at 8:05 P.M. The minutes of
the October 27, 1992 Traffic Committee were approved after it was noted
to amend the minutes to show that Pincus Leitner was also present.
Echo Lane and Murray Avenue
Residents attending the meeting stated haw dangerous this location is
and felt that a stop sign is needed at Murray Avenue. Because Murray
Avenue is a County Road, the County would have to approve a stop sign.
A letter from the County stated that because Murray Avenue is a primary
road, there should be no stop sign and that they volume of traffic did
not warrant a traffic control device. There was a discussion of making
Echo Lane one way from Murray Avenue to the intersection of Hillside
Road, however, the residents attending the meeting felt this would be
inconvenient to those living in the neighborhood. They also cited
visual obstructions at this location which makes traversing the area
difficult. There are two large trees and protruding bushes blocking
the view when approaching the intersection that should be removed.
Because of the configuration of the intersection, cars must pull all
the way out into the intersection before proceeding making it very
dangerous when people are also attempting to cross the street.
Residents also felt that excessive speeding on Murray Avenue warrants a
stop sign. Mr. Litner feel that the configuration of the road is bad
on Murray Avenue and the placement of the trees makes the situation
worse. The County should be contacted concerning the trees. This
matter will appear on a subsequent Traffic Committee agenda after
communication from the County is received.
BRYSON STREET
David Lobl asked if any action had been taken on the sidewalk study.
Mr. Altieri reported that three zones were created for reconstruction
of sidewalks with the third zone to be completed next year. The
background on Bryson Street is that children are walking on lawns of
homeowners because there is no sidewalk at this street. When cars are
parked along the lawn edges it either forces the children to walk in
the street or on people's lawns. There is a Town right-of-way so
-2-
technically people are allowed to walk and this easement will be looked
into. The Town could assume the right-of-way and construct sidewalks
or could enlarge the street. It was suggested that letters be sent to
the residents on Bryson Street educating them of the easement so that
walking will be permitted. The letter will be drafted in conjunction
with the Town Attorney and placed back onto the Traffic Committee
agenda at a later date.
NEW JEFF'ERSON STREET
Nancy Anguila of 16 North Chatsworth Avenue stated that a new NO U TURN
sign is needed at the intersection of North Chatsworth and New
Jefferson Street because the old sign is in a deteriorating condition.
There is also a problem at this intersection when attempting to leave
the parking lot of 16 North Chatsworth and that a NO LEFT TURN sign be
posted. She also stated there should be no parking allowed outside the
gate of the parking lot. A NO PARKING HERE TO CORNER sign should be
established on the north side of North Chatsworth Avenue fran the fire
hydrant to the corner of North Chatsworth Avenue to the entrance of Old
Jefferson Street (entrance to the parking area of 16 North Chatsworth
Avenue) . The Traffic Committee, after discussion, recommended the
above to the Town Board for implementation.
NORTH CHATSWORTH AVENUE INTERSECTION
In 1988, this intersection was subject to a major study and was
redesigned. Mr. Osterveil's letter states of a dangerous condition at
the intersection with traffic turning onto Myrtle Boulevard. The
Traffic Committee feels that this is an enforcement issue. Selective
enforcement will be used at this time with a report due back to the
committee at their next meeting.
Respectfully submitted,
Clara Tracy
