Intersection of Chatsworth/Myrtle/Murray- Audible Pedestrian "WALK" Signal:
Resident Lucia Maret was present to speak in favor of an audible"WALK signal. She stated
that she is visually impaired and it is very difficult for her to discern when it is safe to cross at this
intersection because there is no distinctive pattern to the flow of traffic.
The Commission commented that the constant chirping may be annoying to the surrounding
residents. It was then suggested that the Town issue a key or some type of device to qualifying
residents so that the signal would chirp only when necessary.
The Commission stated that it will study the addition of an audible signal at this intersection in
order to refine the details for future discussions.

Traffic Speed and Volume Increase- Gate House Lane :
Several residents commented that there has been a noticeable increase in high speed traffic
along Gate House Lane and around the surrounding development. The residents stated that their
primary concern was for the many children throughout the area.
The Commission noted that there are no through streets in this development and that the
speeding motorists are most likely residents of the area.
The Commission stated that it had previously requested that the Town conduct a study of the
traffic flow throughout this area. The current status of the study is unknown. The Commission
commented that the study will help to look at the development as a whole and identify the most
problematic areas. This will help the Commission to alleviate the problem for the entire
development, rather than just Gate House Lane.
The Commission recommended that until the study results are available, the residents should
make note of repeat offenders and report them to the police. The Commission also suggested
forming a neighborhood group association to discuss the matter.
Commercial Traffic - Old White Plains Road:
A resident commented that there is excessive commercial traffic, including 18-wheelers, along
Old White Plains Road. The resident stated that these vehicles drive dangerously fast which
presents a substantial hazard, especially considering the heavy pedestrian and bicycle traffic that
also use this road.
The Commission noted that it is difficult to restrict commercial traffic because it is merely
pushed to another street.
The Commission suggested that the residents make note of which vehicles present the greatest
hazards. The residents could then contact the companies and suggest different routes or request
that the vehicles drive more carefully.
Richard Mari agreed to look into the matter further for future discussions.
New Business

(this intersection is in the Village of Mamaroneck.)

Crosswalk Signs at North Chatsworth Avenue near Rochelle Road/Lookout Circle:
Resident Jane Walden indicated that she and other residents walk their school children across
this crosswalk. She stated that it had recently been repainted, however, it is not clearly visible to
passing motorists. She requested that signs be placed along the road so drivers know that they
are coming upon a crosswalk.
Members of the Commission agreed that this situation presents a hazard. It was also stated
that this is an area where motorists would not normally expect to stop.
The Commission made a motion that either W5-1 or W5-2 signs be placed on North
Chatsworth approaching the crosswalk from both directions.
It was noted that at the Town Highway Department's discretion, reminder signs should be
placed around the Town concerning New York State's pedestrian right-of-way law.
Washington Square Handicapped Parking:
Resident Tom Gunther was present with his father-in-law to speak in favor of placing a
handicapped parking space at Washington Square. Mr. Gunther stated that his father-in-law and
other residents have had difficulties parking downhill. He commented that the ascent is steep and
his father-in-law has fallen many times. He requested that if the handicapped space is accepted,
time restriction be implemented so people do not park there for extended time periods.
The Commission noted that enforcement of the time restriction may be difficult. It was then
commented that one space may be insufficient, as parking is already a problem in this area.
The Commission motioned to install one handicapped parking space on the north side of the
entrance to building lof Washington Square on North Chatsworth Avenue. If additional spaces
are deemed necessary, they will be subject for approval at future meetings.
The Commission noted that this issue must go before the Town Board for approval.
Alden Road - Speeding Traffic:
This matter was deferred to the next Traffic Committee meeting.
The Meeting was adjourned at 9:35 p.m.
The next scheduled Traffic Committee meeting will be held on October 21, 1997.
