2. Parking on East Side of Hommocks Road
- Lt. Anderson stated that the two primary concerns were 1) drivers ignoring the posted signs and 2)
the safety of the children being compromised as they cross the street in front of the parked cars.
Traffic Committee-2/10/98 Pg.1
- The Committee noted that parking is available in the school lot and some parents have
instructed their children to meet in this area to avoid the congestion in front of the school.
It was also noted that additional parking is available in a lot northwest of the school, near
where the Town stores leaves.
- Lt. Anderson stated that this northwest parking area is a residential lot for the nearby
apartments, therefore is not a viable alternative. He also commented that, especially on
Saturdays when games are going on, many people park in the school turn-around where
parking is prohibited.
- The Committee stated that if parking in the loop were prohibited and vehicles were allowed
to park along the road, a more orderly situation may result.
- Lt. Anderson commented that it may cause difficulties for bus traffic.
- The Committee stated that the school could adopt a policy where students would be let out of
different sides of the school; this may alleviate the problem through a redistribution of some
traffic.
- The Committee stated that the parking that is already taking place could be allowed, but it
will not solve the problem; additional parking is needed. The Committee inquired why it
was initially designated as no parking.
- Lt. Anderson stated that it is a school zone.
- The Committee stated that the existing parking should be allowed with a time limit, however
motorists should not be allowed to park too long because double parking may result - which
may present an even greater hazard. A discussion ensued and the Committee agreed that the
parking, if permitted, should have strict time limitations to eliminate vehicles parking for
extended periods of time and to prevent double parking.
- The Committee decided that this issue should be looked into further, possibly by the school
superintendent or board of education, before any decisions are made. Parking on the east side
of Hommocks road was declared an ongoing issue.

3. Intersection of Lafayette Road and Huguenot Drive
- Town resident, S. Ault announced that the main problem with this intersection is that motorists
are not stopping at the stop sign on Huguenot Drive.
Traffic Committee-2/10/98 Pg.2
- The Committee commented that the island at this intersection is awkward, which may be a
contributing factor.
- S. Ault suggested that the size of the stop sign at this intersection be increased. He also
inquired about the periodic placing of police cars near this intersection.
- The Committee stated that this intersection was already considered a priority enforcement
area.
- S. Ault stated that the bushes on the island are overgrown which restricts one's range of vision.
He then suggested that reconfiguring the island to allow more median space may help to
alleviate the problem.
- The Committee stated that the bushes on the island should be cut back. Several members of
the Committee commented that a consultant had been hired to reconfigure an island on Echo
Lane and it appears to have been successful; it was agreed that a study of this intersection and
possibly a reconfiguration of this island should be recommended to the Town Board and a
licensed engineer should be consulted for opinions.
4. Morning Traffic Congestion - Murray Avenue School
- Lt. Anderson stated that traffic runs relatively smooth and the minor inconvenience for
morning motorists lasts only about 15 minutes.
- The Committee stated that many safety measures are already being practiced and the brief
congestion in the morning is inevitable, unless parents stop driving their children to school. It
was agreed that the PTA should be informed that this matter has been discussed and there
doesn't appear to be any safety issues.
- The Committee decided that no action will be taken because the problem is minor.
Member Reports
- Frank Vozza commented that the chevrons on Old White Plains Road have yet to be installed
and this matter should be mentioned to Town Administrator, Stephen Altieri.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:11 p.m.
The next scheduled Traffic Committee meeting will be held on March 31, 1998.
