HomeMy WebLinkAbout2001_06_12 Recreation Commission Minutes TOWN OF MAMARONECK RECREATION COMMISSION Meeting Minutes Tuesday, June 12, 2001 The regular meeting of the Town of Mamaroneck Recreation Commission was held on Tuesday, June 12, 2001 in Conference Room "A" of the Mamaroneck Town Center, 740 West Boston Post Road, Mamaroneck, New York at 7:30 P.M. PRESENT: Richard Conlan James Druker Patricia Castellani Rosemary Dufficy Terry Rainaldi William Paonessa Rita Plansky ALSO PRESENT: Jill Fisher, Acting Superintendent of Recreation Ernie Odierna, Town Board Liaison Mary Ellen Faulkner, Secretary CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order at 7:30 P.M. by Commissioner Conlan. APPROVAL OF MEETING MINUTES The minutes of May 8, 2001 were approved, as corrected, unanimously on a motion by Commissioner Druker, seconded by Commissioner Paonessa. ACTING SUPERINTENDENT'S UPDATE 1. Ms. Fisher reported that there are 367 children registered for Hommocks Playground; 167 registered for Murray Pre School; 100 registered for Monroe Pre School; and 70 registered for Music Workshop. 2. Phase 2 of the Memorial Park Playground Development: The Town Board has awarded the contract to Corsetti Contracting. The sidewalks will be included. 3. Rob Lunde is working on the proposals discussed at the May Commission Meeting to add showers to the old bathrooms at the ice rink. As of this date he does not have a commitment from the Mamaroneck Board of Education or anyone else that they would utilize these showers. This proposal was tabled. Mr. Lunde is also gathering proposals for changes to the existing players boxes. Mamaroneck Youth Hockey Association is willing to pay for this work. This was also tabled pending further information. 4. Carpino-Steffens Fields will be fertilized on June 19th by Mike Ryan (weather permitting). 5. On August 24th the Carpino-Steffens Fields will be seeded, aerated, top-dressed and fertilized by Mike Ryan. Twenty one days of rest are needed. Commissioner Druker requested that Ms. Fisher send a letter to the School District with a copy to Sarah Tate regarding these plans. Commissioner Conlan requested that Ms. Fisher invite David McGuckin, Director of Athletics for Mamaroneck Schools to a future meeting. Ms. Fisher has spoken to Mr. McGuckin regarding this and he is very interested to meet with the Commission, but right now he is taking Graduate classes at night. He hopes to meet with the Commission at a future date. 6. The Sound Shore Summer Lacrosse League has withdrawn their request to use the Carpino-Steffens Fields. Recreation Commission Minutes - June 12, 2001 Page II REQUESTS TO USE HOMMOCKS POOL 1. The request to use Hommocks Pool by Co-Op Day Camp was approved unanimously on a motion by Commissioner Castellani, seconded by Commission Dufficy. 2. The request to use Hommocks Pool by TEACH was approved unanimously on a motion by Commissioner Dufficy, seconded by Commissioner Plansky. MAMARONECK SCHOOL DISTRICT CONTRACT Commissioner Druker suggested that the Town contract with the Mamaroneck Board of Education for the use of the Hommocks Pool and the Board of Education contract for use of Hommocks Park Ice Rink should be separated. The School District should always pay two thirds of the prime ice rental rate. Ms. Fisher will prepare an ice rink rental analysis for the next meeting. FACILITY REQUESTS Larchmont Junior Soccer Lague request to use the Carpino-Steffens Fields was approved by the Recreation Commission. Wednesdays are to be eliminated and due to the field maintenance schedule, the starting date needs to be delayed. Ms. Fisher presented a request to the Commission from resident Jack Eisenberg to use the Carpino-Steffens Fields. The Commission rejected this request. Mr. Odierna suggested Mr. Eisenberg might inquire about using Five Mile Island Park in New Rochelle. Mamaroneck Board of Education request to use the Carpino-Steffens Fields was approved by the Recreation Commission. Wednesdays are to be eliminated and due to the field maintenance, the scheduled starting date needs to be delayed. High School Jamboree on August 31" request has been denied, since fields will not be available, due to maintenance. NOT ON THE AGENDA Ms. Fisher informed the Commission of a letter she received this afternoon from a resident parent requesting that the Commission change the age policy at Hommocks Playground from the age of the participant to the grade. The Commission unanimously rejected this request stating that the policy should remain as is. Ms. Fisher distributed the job announcement advertising the Administrative Intern position for the Recreation Department. ADJOURNMENT There being no further business to come before the Commission, on a motion by Commissioner Druker, seconded by Commission Paonessa, the meeting was adjourned at 8:25 P.M.
