HomeMy WebLinkAbout2009_04_14 Recreation Commission Minutes TOWN OF MAMARONECK RECREATION COMMISSION Meeting Minutes April 14, 2009 PRESENT: James Druker, Chairman Robert Morello William Paonessa Rita Plansky Terry Rainaldi Amy Siskind ALSO PRESENT: Jill Fisher, Superintendent of Recreation Ernie Odierna, Town Board Liaison Mary Ellen Faulkner, Commission Secretary EXCUSED: Maura Devaney CALL TO ORDER: The meeting was called to order at 7:30 P.M. by Deputy Chairperson Rainaldi. ACCEPTANCE OF MEETING MINUTES: On a motion by Commissioner Paonessa, seconded by Commissioner Plansky, the Meeting Minutes of March 10, 2009 will unanimously approved as submitted. SUPERINTENDENT'S UPDATE: Ms. Fisher reported the following: 1. Requests for the use of Hommocks Pool this summer have been approved and confirmation letters have been sent to: • The Village of Mamaroneck • Co-Op Camp • The Village of Larchmont 2. Program registration began on Monday, March 30th (approximately 3 weeks earlier the previous years) and is ongoing. Current registration numbers as of April 14th are as follows: Hommocks Playground Camp - 215 Central Pre School Camp - 39 *Monroe Pre School Camp - 85 Extended Day Camp - 36 Teen Escape - 12 Swim Lessons - 81 Tennis Camp - 66 Competitive Swim Team - 44 Golf Lessons/Camp - 18/8 * Camp Monroe applications must be submitted by 4:00 P.M. on Wednesday, April 29th at which time the lottery will be held to fill the 100 space available at the camp. 3. Spring Hockey is underway with 98 skaters registered. 4. Public sessions at the Hommocks Park Ice Rink will be greatly reduced beginning in May until the rink closes on June 14th. However, ice rentals continue to be booked. Town of Mamaroneck Recreation Commission Meeting Minutes April 14, 2009 - Page 2 SUPERINTENDENT'S UPDATE CONTINUED: 5. Spring tennis programs begin the first week of May. 6. The 2nd Annual "Senior" Prom was held on March 3rd and once again was a huge success. 7. The Youth Hockey Program Expense versus Revenue Report was reviewed. After the charges for ice rental, salaries, equipment and dues to the New York State Hockey Association and USA Hockey the program saw a profit of$7,131. 8. Attendance at the Hommocks Park Ice Rink fell in the month of March compared to last year. 9. All camp directors will be returning this summer. 10. To date, the department has processed 29 mail-in registrations. Councilman Odierna inquired if credit cards were being accepted for mail-in registrations. Ms. Fisher replied at this time the department is not allowed to due to security and cost issues. The Recreation Commission would like to urge the Town Board to make arrangements for the Recreation Department to accept credit cards through the mail. Councilman Odierna will bring this issue to the Board at their next work session. 11. Memorial Park Tennis Courts opened on April 1st. The park attendant will be on duty beginning May 1st. Until then, the courts will be left open except in inclement weather. 12. The opening of the Carpino-Steffens Fields was delayed until Monday, April 13th 13. Ms. Fisher and Joanne Aquilino have met with Youth Hockey Director Bob Greason to evaluate the program and make recommendations for next season. Mr. Greason will be invited to a future Commission meeting to discuss these items. 14. Work has been completed on the outdoor pool drain covers. Applications are now being filed with the County Health Department. 15. The new phone system has been installed at the ice rink. 16. An application for a grant has been submitted to the United States Tennis Association to assist with the repairing of the Central School Tennis Courts. 17. The Hommocks Pool closed on April 4th for spring maintenance. The Rye and New Rochelle YMCAs have offered to allow our permit holders access to the pools at a discounted rate. 18. The Highway Department plans to re-seed the lawn at Memorial Park by April 20th. It will then be closed for approximately four weeks. 19. The new playground has been completed at the Richbell Road apartment complex. A ribbon cutting ceremony is planned for a later time. 20. Summer concert and movie sponsorship letters will be sent the week of April 13th to various local businesses. 21. Rob Lunde is working on the bid specifications for the new ice re-surfacing machine. Specifications should be out to vendors by the end of April. 22. A new proposal for the Hommocks Park Ice Rink Feasibility Study has been received from Mr. Dick Ward of Ward Associates that outlines addressing our immediate and long range improvements. The Town Board will review this proposal at their April 21st meeting. ADJOURNMENT: There being no further business to come before the Commission, on a motion by Commissioner Rainaldi, seconded by Commissioner Paonessa the meeting adjourned at 8:10 P.M.
