HomeMy WebLinkAbout2008_09_09 Recreation Commission Minutes TOWN OF MAMARONECK RECREATION COMMISSION Meeting Minutes September 9, 2008 PRESENT: James Druker, Chairman Maura Devaney Robert Morello William Paonessa Rita Plansky Terry Rainaldi Amy Siskind ALSO PRESENT: Jill Fisher, Superintendent of Recreation Ernie Odierna, Town Board Liaison Mary Ellen Faulkner, Commission Secretary CALL TO ORDER: The meeting was called to order at 7:30 P.M. by Chairman Druker. ACCEPTANCE OF MEETING MINUTES: On a motion by Commissioner Rainaldi, seconded by Commissioner Plansky, the Meeting Minutes of August 5, 2008 were unanimously approved as corrected. SUPERINTENDENT'S UPDATE: Ms. Fisher reported the following: 1. Summit Soccer Camp concluded on Friday, August 22nd with a total registration of 108 campers, which are 60 fewer than in 2007. 2. Tennis Camp concluded on August 14th with a total registration of 206, an increase of 45 participants from 2007. 3. The 2008-2009 fall-winter department brochure has been mailed and many residents have already received it. 4. Memorial Park tennis court attendants will be on duty weekends only for the month of October. 5. On Wednesday, the department hosted the 2nd Annual Senior Pool Party on the outdoor lawn at the pool complex. 72 seniors had a great time enjoying a "luau" lunch, the sunshine and our wonderful facility. 6. This fall, the Department is offering 2 new aquatic programs. Guard Start will help participants ages 11 to 14 gain aquatic and leadership knowledge. Seahorses for children ages 2'/2 to 3'/2 is designed for those who are not quite ready for tot lessons, but have aged out of Bubble Babies. 7. 2 new children programs are also planned. Traveling Tots will take little ones ages 3 to 5 to different locations in our community. Green Arts & Pajama Parties will have children ages 3 to 7 creating an art project then using it as a prop in an interactive concert. 8 The Sport Court flooring in the rink has been removed and ice is made. The first rental was Monday, September 8th. Public skating begins on September 28th. Town of Mamaroneck Recreation Commission Meeting Minutes September 9, 2008 - Page 2 SUPERINTENDENT'S UPDATE CONTINUED: 9. The New Rochelle School District would like to send their students, who previously skated at New Roc to the Hommocks Park Ice Rink. We will be able to accommodate their 100 students on Friday afternoons. An increase in the number of youth hockey players is expected due to closing of New Roc. There is a resident only registration period from September 22nd to October 17th. After this date, registration for any remaining spaces will be open to non-residents. 10. Since the late summer field maintenance on the Carpino-Steffens Fields was waived this year, the School District and the Larchmont Junior Soccer League have been using fields since Monday, August 25th. The next scheduled maintenance on the fields will be in November when we will aerate, fertilize, over- seed and top-dress. 11. Work is underway on the 2009 Department Budget. More to follow at the October meeting. 12. The Hommocks Pool was closed September 2nd to 7th for extensive deck and locker room cleaning. 13. A meeting was held with Mike Chiapparelli to discuss his continued association with our hockey program. Mr. Chiapparelli is very interested in continuing as a coach and will do whatever he can to help the program. 14. One individual took advantage of the $200 program fee refund incentive offered to participants of our Spring Lifeguard certification program who worked a minimum of 3 shifts each week for the entire summer. 15. Minor patchwork and color coating was completed last week on the Memorial Park Tennis Courts. Tennis lessons resume there on September 15th 16. A major renovation is needed at the Central School Tennis Courts and the School District has been approached to share the cost. No answer has been received. Chairman Druker inquired to the status of the Feasibility Study. Ms. Fisher stated that a draft has been received and she expects that a meeting will be arranged shortly between the Recreation Commission, Town Board and Architect. Chairman Druker requested that the Commission be briefed prior to that meeting. Ms. Fisher agreed. 2008-2009 FALL-WINTER PROGRAM FEES: On a motion by Commissioner Plansky, seconded by Commissioner Paonessa, the following program fees were adopted unanimously. Yogasculpt $160/resident $320/non resident Mini Fitness $ 82/resident $110/non resident Lifeguard Review $200/resident $225/non resident CPR for the Professional Rescuer $ 75/resident $100/non resident Guard Start $100/non resident Swim Lessons $120/non resident Town of Mamaroneck Recreation Commission Meeting Minutes September 9, 2008 - Page 3 2008-2009 FALL-WINTER PROGRAM FEES CONTINUED: Bubble Babies $ 80/non resident Babysitter's Training $ 85/non resident BADGER SWIM CLUB REQUEST: Mr. John Collins, of the Badger Swim Club, has requested the use of the Hommocks Pool, three days a week, two hours each day for 40 weeks for 20 to 30 swimmers. The Commission would like to accommodate the Club but is sensitive that it might inconvenience resident swimmers. Chairman Druker asked Ms. Fisher to compile a schedule of times that might not be objectionable to our residents. Ms. Fisher will arrange a meeting with Mr. Collins to discuss this schedule and if acceptable, will enter into an agreement with the Bader Swim Club on a trial basis. CHANGE OF MEETING DATE: Since the Town is currently preparing the 2009 Budget, the Town Administrator, Stephen Aliteri, has requested that the Recreation Commission change their meeting date in October. On a motion by Commissioner Plansky, seconded by Commissioner Devaney, the Commission unanimously agreed to change their October meeting date from October 21, 2008 to October 7, 2008. ADJOURNMENT: There being no further business to come before the Commission, on a motion by Commissioner Morello, seconded by Commissioner Siskind, the meeting was adjourned at 8:15 P.M.
