HomeMy WebLinkAbout2003_02_11 Recreation Commission Minutes TOWN OF MAMARONECK RECREATION COMMISSION Meeting Minutes February 11, 2003 PRESENT: James Druker Patricia Castellani Rosemary Dufficy William Paonessa Rita Plansky Terry Rainaldi ALSO PRESENT: Jill Fisher, Superintendent of Recreation Mary Ellen Faulkner, Commission Secretary EXCUSED: Richard Conlan, Chairman Ernie Odierna, Town Board Liaison CALL TO ORDER: The meeting was called to order at 7:30 P.M. by Commissioner Druker. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: On a motion by Commissioner Paonessa, seconded by Commissioner Dufficy, the minutes of the Special Meeting with the Board of Education were accepted as corrected and the minutes of January 14, 2003 Recreation Commission were unanimously approved as submitted. SUPERINTENDENT'S UPDATE: Ms. Fisher updated the Commission on the following: 1. Central School will be the site for this summer's neighborhood Pre-School Program and Music Workshop. 2. The Annual Resident Skating Party at Hommocks Park Ice Rink is March 2°d Commission members and their families are invited to attend. 3. Several Recreation Department staff members attended a Shelter Management Training Seminar sponsored by the American Red Cross on February 11`h 4. The Department is offering several new programs this spring. A. Pilates (co-sponsored with the Village of Mamaroneck) B. Cartoon Network Introduction to Tennis for children in first and second grades. C. Spring Diving D. Spring Dolphins 5. The Department is in the process of networking the Ice Rink with the Recreation Office software system via a DSL connection. 6. An AED unit and a wall-mounted case have been purchased for the Hommocks Park Ice Rink and will be installed as soon as all the paperwork is completed. 7. 2002 Year End Report is done and the Recreation Department did very well. Commissioner Druker inquired if there have been any results from the television ad for the Ice Rink. Ms. Fisher replied that it is too early to see any results. She will keep the Commission informed. Town of Mamaroneck Recreation Commission Meeting Minutes February 11, 2003 - Page II 8. Scheduling has begun for the Summer Concerts at Memorial Park. Ms. Fisher asked if any Commission member had a conflict with any businesses on the proposed list of those that the Town was thinking of seeking sponsorships from. Commissioner Paonessa has a conflict with The Coughlin Group. Ms. Fisher asked if the Commission members have any suggestions of other businesses that might be contacted. Some of the suggestions were: Stop & Shop Dunkin Donuts The Gap Pier One Starbucks Blockbuster Cosi Homefair 9. Commissioner Castellani inquired if Ms. Fisher had more information about Co-Op Camp. Ms. Fisher informed the Commission that she and Mr. Altieri, the Town Administrator will be meeting with Sarah Tate of the School District and Co-Op Camp is one of the issues they will be discussing. Commissioner Paonessa would like to attend the meeting as a Trustee of the Village of Mamaroneck and a Town of Mamaroneck Recreation Commission member. Commissioner Castellani does not think he should represent both parties. Commissioner Paonessa will attend as either a Trustee or Commissioner. Ms. Fisher inquired if any other Commission members were interested in attending. Commissioner Castellani would like to. Ms. Fisher will keep the Commission informed. 9. The bill from the Mamaroneck Board of Education for Hommocks Pool has been received with no discount for the time the pool was closed. Ms. Fisher and Mr. Altieri will renegotiate with the School District. NEW *non residents will be allowed to register for tennis programs after a resident deadline Town of Mamaroneck Recreation Commission Meeting Minutes February 11, 2003 - Page V REQUESTS FOR USE OF THE CARPINO-STEFFENS FIELDS On a motion by Commissioner Rainaldi, seconded by Commissioner Druker, a permit was granted to Rich Becker for use of the Carpino-Steffens Fields July 7th to July 18th from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. for the Tiger Soccer Camp. On a motion by Commissioner Castellani, seconded by Commissioner Paonessa, a permit was granted to Ed Droesch of the Larchmont-Mamaroneck Youth Lacrosse Association for use of the Carpino-Steffens Fields. The Association may use one field on Fridays and either Saturdays or Sundays until 8:00 P.M. INCENTIVE PROPOSAL FOR CAMP DIRECTORS: Recreation Supervisor, Toni Ann Guagliano requested that the Commission consider approval of allowing children of Camp Directors to participate in Town camps free of charge. The Commission is uncomfortable allowing non-paying children into camp. Several options were suggested such as; scholarships, discounts and re-evaluating salaries. Commissioner Dufficy inquired if the Department can determine what other municipalities do. Ms. Fisher suggested a salary analysis (to be sure that the Town is competitive with other municipalities) may be the best solution. The Commission agreed and in the Fall the Recreation Department will conduct a salary survey of nearby Recreation Departments. ADJOURNMENT: There being no further business to come before the Commission, on a motion by Commissioner Paonessa, seconded by Commissioner Druker the meeting was adjourned at 8:35 P.M.
