Work is underway on the 2208-2009 Fall-Winter Brochure. The goal is to have it out to the public approximately the second week of September. 8. The Hommocks Playground and both Pre-School Camp conclude on Friday, August 8th. These programs will then be evaluated and recommendations for any changes for next year will be made. 9. Hommocks Pool will open at 10:00 A.M. beginning August 11tn. 10. The Town has purchased a new handicapped lift at the cost of$4,200 to allow access into the pool for those that can not use the stairs. The previous one has been broken for a year and the School District refused to purchase one, even though they own the pool and should by rights provide accessibility for all its' users', especially for any disabled students. After denying our own residents access, we needed to move forward and purchase it. It was installed by the 2nd week of July. 11. The 2009 annual budget process has begun. 12. Locker Room custodians, hired again this year, have worked out very well. To date, no complaints have been received regarding the cleanliness of the locker rooms. However, the School District has said that we have used an excessive amount of toilet paper. 13. A total of$5,800 in corporate sponsorships has been received this summer to offset the cost of the concerts and movie. 14. The Village of Mamaroneck Senior Citizen Center will be merging the Town of Mamaroneck/Village of Larchmont Senior Center within the next month. Maria Gallagher, who currently coordinates the Town/Village Center, and also works with the Recreation Department, will obviously be servicing a much larger population because of this. However, she will be getting some additional help for the senior program and the current plan is that she will still be able to provide the Recreation Department with her services. 15. A meeting will be held shortly with Mike Chiapparelli to discuss his role in the 2008-2009 Youth House League Hockey Program. 16. Some of the new hockey procedures, discussed at the July meeting, have been incorporated in the 2008-2009 Fall-Winter Brochure and work has begun on updating the parent-participant manual as well. Refunds will be prorated based on the date received. A 10% administrative fee will be charged. • Requests for partial refunds will be considered when received in writing directly to the Superintendent of Recreation and received in the Recreation Department Office at least ten (10) business days prior to the first class/session and a replacement can be found. A 10% administrative will be charged. If the request is made less than 10 business days and a replacement can be found, a 50% administrative fee will be charged. • All approved refunds will: 1. Require registrants to complete a refund claim. 2. Follow the Town Finance Department's bill payment schedule. CHANGE IN HOLIDAY POOL SCHEDULE: During the school year most of the Town Pool Staff is employed elsewhere. It has become difficult to find qualified staff available to cover the early holiday opening hour. The Aquatics Director has requested that the holiday hours at Hommocks Pool be changed from weekday opening at 4:00 P.M. to weekday opening at 5:00 P.M. The closing time will remain the same. On a motion by Commissioner Rainaldi, seconded by Commissioner Plansky the Commission unanimously approved the change. SUMMER CAMP EVALUATIONS: TEEN ESCAPE Alison , Director of the Teen Escape Camp was unavailable to attend the meeting, so Joanne Aquilino, Recreation Supervisor gave her report. Ms. Aquilino reported that when the Teen Escape program was originally planned it was expected that the program would run for six weeks and have 38 participants. As it turned out, enrollment did not reach expected numbers and the program had to be adjusted to three weeks utilizing a Town owned mini bus. Some of the trips the campers enjoyed were: kayaking in Harbor Island; attending a Yankee baseball game; fishing in Long Island Sound and riding "The Beast" around New York Harbor. RECOMMENDATIONS FOR 2009: 1. Use second mini bus which will allow for additional campers, as well as staff. 2. Open the camp to 9th graders 3. Plan a trip to the Liberty State Science Museum 4. Plan a trip horseback riding (if possible) Town of Mamaroneck Recreation Commission Meeting Minutes Page 7 - August 5, 2008 SUMMER CAMP EVALUATIONS CONTINUED: CAMP MONROE: Mrs. Ellin informed the Commission that once again Camp Monroe had a very successful summer. Beside the usual camp activities the campers enjoyed many special events including visits for the Town of Mamaroneck Police and Fire Departments and Volunteer Ambulance Corps; Pajama Breakfast; Crazy Hair Day and the Annual Art Show. Mrs. Ellin requested that the room the 4 year olds use be painted. She then thanked Joanne Aquilino for always being available and helpful; Jill Fisher for making time to visit to see how "we are doing"; Michael Orchanian (the Monroe caretaker) and his family for making sure the facility is clean and safe; the Office Staff at the Recreation Department for always being helpful; the Sheldrake Staff who are always available to render their assistance; Jordan, Camp Monroe E.M.T. for taking such good care of the campers and her Unit Leaders and Counselors who make Camp Monroe special. HOMMOCKS PLAYGROUND: T.J. Ostruzka, Director of the Hommocks Playground first wanted to thank his Assistant Director, Bruno Duarte for all of his help and support this summer. Bruno, who has been with the camp since he was a counselor, was invaluable with his knowledge of the program. Mr. Ostruzka informed the Commission that the Hommocks Playground daily schedule is divided into 6 time periods, which can be adapted to the weather. Hommocks Playground special events included: out of camp trips to Playland; My 3 Sons; Norwalk Maritime Aquarium; Crazy Hat Day; Disco Day; Color Wars; Carnival Day and a camp bar-b-q. A special trip to see a New York Met baseball game for campers in the 5th and 6th grade was a huge success. P.O Rui from the Town of Mamaroneck Police Department gave the children a very important presentation on internet safety. Recommendations for the 2009 season: 1. Repair the water fountain in the back of the rink or add another one. 2. Purchase a "pop up" tent to be used as a "cooling area" with a water cooler on the blacktop. 3. Purchase different sporting equipment (T.J. will supply a list). 4. Offer swim instruction for half the daily swim period. 5. Add more "theme days" such as Halloween; Pajama Day, etc. 6. Extend the Flint Park competitions to include more campers and perhaps counselors. Mr. Ostruzka thanked Joanne Aquilino for always being available to answer questions and "keeping us on our toes" and the staff in the Recreation Office for all the hard work they do everyday. Mr. Ostruzka's philosophy is to send campers home daily "safe and tired", he feels that this goal was accomplished each day. Town of Mamaroneck Recreation Commission Meeting Minutes August 5, 2008 - Page 8 SUMMER CAMP EVALUATIONS CONTINUED: CAMP CENTRAL Ms. Triano informed the Commission that children at Camp Central had a very active summer. Special events included: a visit from the librarian every Tuesday; professional entertainers ever Wednesday; Red, White & Blue Day; Crazy Hat Day; Backwards Day and the annual end of camp Sing Along. There were visits from the Town of Mamaroneck Police and Fire Departments, as well as the Volunteer Ambulance Corps. A special treat, again this year, was a visit from Neil, the Village of Mamaroneck K-9 police dog who trilled the campers and counselors alike with a demonstration of his skills. Campers were also visited by members of the Larchmont Senior Center, who joined them in dancing and as an audience for the rehearsal for the Sing Along. Ms. Triano voiced her continued concern for children with peanut allergies. Recommendations for 2009: 1. Keep Central as the campsite (if at all possible) 2. Institute a curbside drop-off and pick-up She then thanked Ms. Aquilino for always being there, Ms. Fisher for always asked "how we are doing?" and visiting, and the staff at the Recreation Office for all they do. IDEAS FOR 2009 CAMP SEASON: Ms. Aquilino and Ms. Fisher then discussed several ideas that are being considered for the 2009 camp season that include • Instituting a "Breakfast Club" for early drop-off at Hommocks • Opening the Teen Escape program to children entering the 9th grade • Establishing a "slush fund" to possibly help pay for incidentals such as lunch for a child who did not bring one. ADJOURNMENT: There being no further business to come before the Commission, on a motion by Commissioner Rainaldi, seconded by Commissioner Siskind, the meeting was adjourned at 8:45 P.M.
