HomeMy WebLinkAbout2013_09_24 Recreation Commission Minutes TOWN OF MAMARONECK RECREATION COMMISSION MEETING MINUTES September 24, 2013 PRESENT: James Druker, Chairman William Paonessa Rita Plansky Amy Siskind Susan Sigel EXCUSED: Robert Morello Terry Rainaldi ALSO PRESENT: Jill Fisher, Superintendent of Recreation Jaine Elkind Eney, Town Board Liaison Eileen Puleo, Commission Secretary CALL TO ORDER: The meeting held in the V.F.W. Lodge, 1288 Boston Post Road, was called to order at 7:30 P.M. by Chairman Druker. ACCEPTANCE OF MEETING MINUTES: On a motion by Commissioner Paonessa, seconded by Commissioner Plansky, the Meeting Minutes of August 6, 2013 were unanimously approved as submitted. SUPERINTENDENT'S UPDATE: Ms. Fisher reported the following: 1. Applications for the use of the Carpino-Steffens Fields have been approved for: • Larchmont Junior Soccer League • Mamaroneck Schools • Westchester Soccer Club 2. Summit Soccer Camp enrollment was up this summer over last year with 94 enrolled. Net revenue was $6,225. 3. Mrs. Melissa Aversa e-mail to Ms. Fisher complimenting the office staff. 4. Tennis Camp enrollment was down this summer with 177 enrolled as compared to 189 last year. 5. The Fall/Winter brochure and the Skating School brochure are out and registration has started. 6. After September 30th, there will no longer be an attendant at Memorial Park Tennis Courts. The courts will remain open without an attendant until the end of October. 7. Fall Kayaking began on September 21st. Adult Kayaking was a big success with 9 enrolled and several more asking us to expand upon this program. 8. Registration for the first session of Skating School was held on Monday, September 23rd. Public skating will start on Tuesday, October 1st 9. The Recreation website and Ice Rink website has been updated for the season. 10. The fall swim lessons will begin on Saturday, October 5th 11.The fall Golf program has 18 participants enrolled in this session. 12.The Future Rangers hockey program began on September 15th. Participants will receive a jersey and Certificate of Completion. 13.The Try Hockey for Free Day will be held on October 5th Town of Mamaroneck Recreation Commission Meeting Minutes September 24, 2013 - Page 2 14.Both dehumidifiers at the Ice Rink failed. Rob Lunde was able to repair one dehumidifier with the parts from the second dehumidifier in time for the first ice rental on September 9th 15.The main restrooms are currently under renovations. 16.Rob Lunde fractured a rib while working on the ice. He has been placed on light duty. 17.The annual maintenance to the Carpino-Steffens Fields was completed on Monday, August 26th 18.This summer, 5 full and 8 partial scholarships were awarded for a total of$4,244. 19.Mike Gibson is finishing up repairs to the benches at Memorial Park. He will return to the Highway Department in November. 20.The outdoor pool complex has been closed up. Some needed maintenance work is being done on the concrete stone walkways surrounding the outdoor pool decking. 21.Again this season we will be working with Groupon on an ice rink coupon. 22.The Cut Hut will begin their fifth season at the ice rink. 23.Four companies submitted proposals for the new ESCO plan. The proposals came back very competitive. BSS Architects will be reviewing the proposals first. NEW OFFICE HOURS FOR THE RECREATION DEPARTMENT: Town Administrator, Stephen Altieri has proposed new evening office hours for the Recreation Department. Current hours are the 1st and 3rd Wednesday evenings from 7pm to 9pm. Mr Altieri proposed keeping the office open from 4:30pm to 7pm. After further discussion, the Recreation Commission suggested that if the hours were going to be changed that the office should remain open until 7:30pm. On a motion by Commissioner Rainaldi, seconded by Chairman Commissioner Siskind, the request was unanimously approved. 2014 RECREATION DEPARTMENT PROPOSED BUDGET: Ms. Fisher reviewed the Proposed 2014 Recreation Department Budget. EXPENSES: General No major changes were made. Recreation: Pool: Pool salaries will increase for Swim Team coaches due to hiring additional coaches as the program is growing. Rink: Ice Rink salaries will decrease due to the Ice Rink closing during the renovations. Spring Hockey will also be cancelled. The utilities bills for the Ice Rink will be slightly lower due to the closure. Youth: The number of contractual employees has increased to provide additional programs. The Other Services line has been increased due to possible relocation costs of the Hommocks camp next summer. Adult: Program Clinic Instruction line has been decreased due to lower projected enrollment numbers. Memorial A small increase was made to the Miscellaneous Equipment line and Park: Equipment Repairs/Maintenance line. Youth: The Youth Program line has been increased due to additional programs added. Pool: A new revenue line for pool programs has been added separating it out from pool admissions. Rink Due to the planned closure, the Rink Concession line has been Concession: decreased. Hockey: Due to the planned closure, the Hockey line has been decreased. Skating Due to the planned closure, the Skating School line has been decreased. School: ADJOURNEMENT: There being no further business to come before the Commission, on a motion by Commissioner Siskind, seconded by Chairman Druker, the meeting was adjourned at 8:35 P.M.
