HomeMy WebLinkAbout2013_11_12 Recreation Commission Minutes (2) TOWN OF MAMARONECK RECREATION COMMISSION MEETING MINUTES November 12, 2013 PRESENT: James Druker, Chairman Robert Morello William Paonessa Rita Plansky Terry Rainaldi Susan Sigel Amy Siskind ALSO PRESENT: Jill Fisher, Superintendent of Recreation Jaine Elkind Eney, Town Board Liaison Eileen Puleo, Commission Secretary Stephen Altieri, Town Administrator Robert Lunde, Manager, Ice Rink CALL TO ORDER: The meeting held in the Community Room of the Hommocks Park Ice Rink was called to order at 7:35 P.M. by Chairman Druker. ACCEPTANCE OF MEETING MINUTES: On a motion by Commissioner Paonessa, seconded by Commissioner Rainaldi, the Meeting Minutes of September 24, 2013 were unanimously approved as submitted. SUPERINTENDENT'S UPDATE: Ms. Fisher reported the following: 1. Session 1 of Skating School concluded on November 8th with an enrollment of 200. Last year we had 177 enrolled. 2. Session 2 of Skating School concludes on December 20th with an enrollment of 287. 3. The House League Hockey program started November 9th with an enrollment of 119. 4. Ice Rink general attendance numbers are down for October 2013. Attendance should pick up as the weather gets colder. 5. Enclosed is the November ice rink calendar. 6. The High School/Adult Volleyball program will start November 13th 7. Session 1 of Tot/Youth Swim Lessons is up from last year with 63 enrolled. 8. Adult fitness is underway. Zumba enrollment is down from last year with 45 enrolled. 9. The Men's Basketball program is averaging $200/night in revenue. 10.The Adult Triathlon program is in its 2nd year with 20 participants. 11.Various rink ads have been placed through Val Pak, Rye Patch and Groupon. 12.Our Groupon.com deal was so successful last year that it is running again this year. 617 Groupons have been sold. 13.Our new program, Future Rangers in cooperation with the NY Rangers had 19 enrolled. Certificates and Jerseys were given to each player. 14.Try Hockey For Free Day in cooperation with the NY Rangers was a big hit with 237 in attendance. Positive feedback was received. Each participant received a hockey stick and an autographed photo of ex-NY Ranger, Ron Duguay. 15.Aqua Zumba and Aqua Jog have 17 participants. Town of Mamaroneck Recreation Commission Meeting Minutes November 12, 2013 - Page 2 SUPERINTENDENT'S UPDATE CONTINUED: 16.Paddleboards have been purchased for our new Paddleboard program which will be held at Harbor Island. 17.Session 1 of Youth Fencing has 24 enrolled. 18.The Carpino-Steffens Fields are scheduled to be aerated, top-dressed, seeded and fertilized on November 25th. The fields will then be closed until the beginning of April, 2014. 19.Memorial Park Tennis Courts and park building have been winterized, closed and locked for the winter. 20.Hommocks Pool was closed September 30th and October 1st as a precaution due to threats made against the school. 21.The Recreation budget was presented on October 28th. The Town Board is considering adding back additional pool hours that were removed last year. 22.Due to construction at the ice rink, the Hommocks Playgroup camp will need to be relocated. Mr Altieri and Ms. Fisher met with school officials on November 6th to discuss availability throughout the district. No additional space is available, therefore they will most likely need to pursue out of district options. 23.The Recreation staff is currently working on the spring/summer brochure. 24.A copy of Participation Trends for the Recreation Department is enclosed for review. 25.The front restrooms are being updated with funds received from NBC Studios. 26.On November 5th, Ms. Fisher, Chairman Druker, Mr. Altieri and Ms. Eney met with MYHA representatives Mike Loga and Steve Light regarding the renovations at the ice rink. MYHA expressed that they would be interested in new lockerooms at MYHA's expense funded through fundraising. MYHA would also like the Town to consider renovating the back restrooms and add showers. MYHA also expressed interest in having a studio rink built adjacent to the main building. The Town will be consulting with BBS Architects regarding all these new additions. MYHA will be responsible for all costs and extras. After much discussion, the Commission passed the following resolutions: RESOLUTION: WHEREAS the Town of Mamaroneck Recreation Commission fully endorses the addition of showers to be part of the renovations at the expense of the Mamaroneck Youth Hockey Association. RESOLUTION: WHEREAS the Town of Mamaroneck Recreation Commission fully endorses funds be allocated for the renovation of the back Ice Rink bathrooms. REQUEST FROM CHRISTIAN A. GORMAN: A letter was received from Mr. Christian Gorman requesting a full refund of his 2012 pool permit. Mr. Gorman is a disabled adult and wasn't able to use his permit due to being hospitalized. After further discussion and review, Commissioner Rainaldi made a motion to grant a full refund, seconded by Commissioner Plansky. All in favor. Town of Mamaroneck Recreation Commission Meeting Minutes November 12, 2013 - Page 3 REQUEST FROM RUTH CAMPANELLI: A letter was received from Ms. Ruth Campanelli requesting that the Commission consider once again restricting the first half hour of weekday swimming for members only without any campers. After further discussion, the Commission unanimously agreed that the pools hours would remain unchanged. ADJOURNMENT: There being no further business to come before the Commission, on a motion by Chairman Druker, seconded by Commissioner Paonessa, the meeting was adjourned at 8:55 P.M.
