Improving the quality of life • Round Table Summaries and Flip-charting — by ToM & Collaborative • Voting with Dots - All • Discussion on Voting and Priorities — Nancy Seligson • Next Steps and Wrap Up — Nancy Seligson The ToM Sustainability Collaborative —Workshop - Definitions and Goals • What do we mean by the Long Term Viability of the Town? o As we look into the future — 10, perhaps 20 years, communities are asking what will change substantially. o Will: ■ sea levels rise dramatically, rivers overflow frequently? ■ fossil fuels become so expensive they hurt our economy? ■ storms be so severe we are constantly in a recovery mode? o What actions can we take to be better prepared for these situations? • What is sustainability/resiliency/quality of life? o Sustainability - definition based on the UNEP (United Nations Environmental Programme): ■ Living today without compromising the welfare of future generations, or in the vernacular — living within our means of available resources such as land, fossil fuels, water, materials, etc. ■ slowing the causes of global warming (use of fossil fuels). o Resiliency — the ability of a Community to prepare for and bounce back from negative events such as severe storms, droughts etc. — (adapting to climate change). o Quality of Life — in the context of sustainability and resiliency, quality of life speaks to: ■ a way of living, within our means as described in the definition of sustainability and adapting our lifestyle to cope with storms and their effects while enjoying our Town and maintaining or improving our level of lifestyle ■ Some examples include: • less noise, air & water pollution, traffic and use of fossil fuels, • more use of renewable energy sources. • more walking, bicycling, and use of our parks and waterfront s • more use of local products and services, • more local opportunities and jobs • What is the Tripe Bottom Line? — the triple bottom line is a concept by which individuals, organizations or communities work toward a bottom line that includes economic goals (money), environmental goals, and social goals. • The Sustainability/Resiliency Plan — will develop concepts to enhance the long term viability of the Town of Mamaroneck by focusing on, Improving sustainability, resiliency and the quality of life. The ToM Sustainability Collaborative —Workshop - Handout Round Table Discussions - Guidelines This is a brainstorming session — all ideas are welcome! Please do not criticize or censor. Please be time sensitive and careful of feelings. A Facilitator will help with questions and a Note-taker will capture ideas. At the end of each Round Table Discussion, please try and sit with new people for the next session so that you meet new people and get fresh ideas. Round Table Discussions — Part 1 — Improving Sustainability • Go around the Table and introduce yourselves • Discuss the topic and brainstorm problems and possible solutions • We would like to know your concerns, and ideas • Note-taker will record ideas on flip-charts Round Table — Part 2 — Improving Resiliency • Go around the Table and introduce yourselves • Discuss the topic and brainstorm problems and possible solutions • We would like to know your concerns, and ideas • Note-taker will record ideas on flip-charts Round Table Discussions — Part 3 — Improving Quality of Life • Go around the Table and introduce yourselves • Discuss the topic and brainstorm problems and possible solutions • We would like to know your concerns, and ideas • Note-taker will record ideas on flip-charts At the conclusion of these sessions, the ToM will compile the ideas on large sheets of paper and paste them on the walls so that dot voting can occur. Dot Voting is a process where you place colored dots next to the ideas you like most. Specific guidelines will be given at the Workshop.
