HomeMy WebLinkAbout2016_10_04 Recreation Commission Minutes TOWN OF MAMARONECK RECREATION COMMISSION MEETING MINUTES October 4, 2016 PRESENT: James Druker, Chairman Robert Morello Nathalie Orans William Paonessa Terry Rainaldi Susan Sigel EXCUSED: Rita Plansky ALSO PRESENT: Jill Fisher, Superintendent of Recreation Jaine Elkind Eney, Town Board Liaison Vicky Laoutaris, Recreation Supervisor Eileen Puleo, Commission Secretary Stephen Altieri, Town Administrator CALL TO ORDER: The meeting held in the VFW Lodge, 1288 Boston Post Road was called to order at 7:20 P.M. by Chairman Druker. ACCEPTANCE OF MEETING MINUTES: On a motion by Chairman Druker, seconded by Commissioner Rainaldi, the Meeting Minutes of August 09, 2016 were unanimously approved as submitted. SUPERINTENDENT'S UPDATE: Ms. Fisher reported the following: 1. Fall registration began on August 22nd. Several new programs have been offered for this season. 2. On-line registration was a huge success. On the first day of registration 135 residents registered on-line for programs totaling over $42,000 and 94 residents walked in for a total of$33,000. This is approximately $19,000 over last year's revenue on the first day of registration. 3. There will no longer be an attendant at the Memorial Park Tennis Courts after September 30th. The courts will remain open without an attendant until the end of October. 4. Registration for the first session of Skating School was held on September 26th 5. A copy of the October ice rink calendar is enclosed for your information. 6. All fall aquatic programs will begin the first week of October and are fully enrolled. Swim Lessons: 104 Dolphins: 44 7. The Try Hockey For Free Day program will not take place this year. The NY Rangers have made changes to their program which will not coordinate with the timing of ours. 8. The Future Rangers program began on September 17th. Each participant will receive a Future Ranger Jersey. 9. Fall tennis programs began the week of September 12th 10.Fall golf lessons began the week of September 19th Town of Mamaroneck Recreation Commission Meeting Minutes October 4, 2016 - Page 2 SUPERINTENDENT'S UPDATE CONTINUED: 11.The Youth Padi Seal Scuba Program begins on October 15th. We are excited to have this program back. 12.All Kayaking and Paddle Boarding programs that took place at Harbor Island have finished for the season. 13.The Ice Rink has a new promotional brochure. We consolidated all of the rink information into one nice brochure that will be made available for patrons. 14.Our first ice rental was Monday, August 22nd and public skating sessions will begin on October 1st 15.The Larchmont Ledger featured an article on our Swim Team and Kat Stuttle, Head Coach of MSC Swim Team who won "Coach of the Year". 16.This summer, a total of 14 families received financial assistance at a value of approximately $5,000. 17.We will be working with Groupon again this season on a discounted admission coupon. However, some changes were made to the Groupon deal in order to get us additional dollars and blackout dates will now apply during holidays and school breaks. 18.The annual maintenance to the fields was completed on August 29th by Landtek and the fields re-opened for play on September 10th 19.Some additional maintenance will be performed on the mechanical system of the outdoor pools before they are completely closed up for the winter. The pool lawn is scheduled to be top dressed, aerated and re-seeded. 20.Rob Lunde and Mike Gibson have been busy with small improvements at the ice rink. New coat hooks have been installed in the locker rooms and new flat screen TV's have been hung in the rink arena. 21.Several projects have been planned for this fall. A new awning will be installed to the filter building which will provide additional shade at the pool. Six additional picnic tables for the pool concession area have been purchased and the new pathway lights at the rink have been ordered. 22.Jennifer and Wayne Pollak welcomed a baby boy, Cole William on August 29th Jennifer will be returning to work in December. 23.Steve Altieri, Town Administrator made an announcement that the Town of Mamaroneck has purchased the VFW building. EMAIL FROM ROSALIND CIMINO, I.T. DIRECTOR: Rosalind Cimino, Town I.T. Director has been monitoring our new website and the percentage of resident users that read our Recreation Brochure and the Town's Newsletter on-line. The Recreation Brochure was emailed to about 6000 people making the click thru rate at 12% so we are doing very well against the national average of 2%. THANK YOU LETTER FROM JEFFREY MARMOL: We received a Thank You Letter from Mr. Jeffrey Marmol who worked in the Recreation Office this summer. Jeff had such a positive experience that he will be pursuing a career in the Recreation field. EMAIL FROM ANTHONY SILGATO, TOWN COMPTROLLER: Enclosed was an update from Anthony Siligato, Town Comptroller on the Ice Rink Trust Fund balances. The Ice Rink Trust has $36,976 and the Ice Rink Locker Room Trust has $38,111. Town of Mamaroneck Recreation Commission Meeting Minutes October 4, 2016 - Page 3 REQUEST FROM MYHA: MYHA Mite Club Manager, Erik Eaton submitted a letter of request for a donation of ice time for the Eighth Annual "Turkey Shoot-Out Thanksgiving Tournament" to be held on Saturday, November 28th. After further discussion, Chairman Druker, seconded by Commissioner Rainaldi, made a motion to donate 2 hours of ice time to MYHA for this event. All in favor. 2017 RECREATION DEPARTMENT PROPOSED BUDGET: Ms. Fisher reviewed the Proposed 2017 Recreation Department Budget. EXPENSES: General: Additional software for renewal of pool permits. Office lobby to be painted and new carpet. A new large metal storage garage for the VFW/Senior Center to store our kayaks and paddleboards. Pool: Replace some of the pool lawn furniture. Increase pay scale for lifeguards. Create additional shade at the pool lawn area. Rink: Replace original air conditioner unit in lobby. Replace some exterior doors. Improved insulation for the rink floor in the summer months. Youth: Expand the travel camp from 20 participants to 50 participants with (2) 3 week sessions. Hire a camp secretary at the Hommocks Playgroup Camp. Purchase a commercial sized giant inflatable movie screen with projection equipment. Hire a sports company for camp to provide a better sports and game activities. Adult: No Major changes were made. Memorial Provide four evening concerts for residents. Add a Fall Festival to Park: our program offerings. REVENUE: Adult: Minimal increase. Youth: Increased due to additional programs planned and the addition of more participants for the Hommocks On The Go Camp. Camp fees have also increased. Increase pay scale for camp staff and hire a camp secretary at Hommocks Playground Camp. Pool Progs: Increased due to the number of pool permits sold and increase enrollment numbers. Increase pay scale for lifeguards. Ice Rink: Increase in General Admission numbers. Recreation: Ice Rink: Replace the existing Ice Rink floor insulation. Replace 2 sets of old exterior Ice Rink doors. Replace air conditioning unit in Ice Rink lobby. Memorial Park: Replace shingles on Memorial Park Attendant Hut. ADJOURNEMENT: There being no further business to come before the Commission, on a motion by Chairman Druker, seconded by Commissioner Plansky, the meeting was adjourned at 8:40 P.M.
