HomeMy WebLinkAbout2017_11_14 Recreation Commission Minutes TOWN OF MAMARONECK RECREATION COMMISSION MEETING MINUTES November 14, 2017 PRESENT: James Druker, Chairman William Paonessa Terry Rainaldi Susan Sigel ALSO PRESENT: Jill Fisher, Superintendent of Recreation Vicky Laoutaris, Recreation Supervisor Jaine Elkind Eney, Town Board Liaison Eileen Puleo, Commission Secretary Brendan Collins, MYHA President EXCUSED: Dr. Robert Morello Nathalie Orans Rita Plansky CALL TO ORDER: The meeting held in the VFW Lodge, 1288 Boston Post Road was called to order at 7:15 P.M. by Chairman Druker. ACCEPTANCE OF MEETING MINUTES: On a motion by Chairman Druker, seconded by Commissioner Paonessa, the Meeting Minutes of October 3, 2017 were unanimously approved as submitted. SUPERINTENDENT'S UPDATE: Ms. Fisher reported the following: 1. Session 1 of Skating School concluded on November 7th with an enrollment of 150. Last year's enrollment was at 228. 2. Registration for Session 2 of Skating School began on October 30th with an enrollment of 238. 3. The House League Hockey program begins November 11th with a current enrollment of 100. 4. The Ice Rink's general attendance numbers are enclosed for review. 5. The November rink calendar is enclosed for your information. 6. The Men's Basketball program began on October 16th. 7. All Tennis programs have concluded for this year. Tennis programs will resume in May. 8. The Adult Volleyball program begins on November 15th with a current enrollment of 46. 9. The Aviation and Magic programs which were offered on November 10th were well attended. 10.To date we have sold 120 Groupons. Last year's Groupon sales at this time were 238. 11.The Aqua Zumba and Aqua Jog classes have a combined enrollment of 39. 12.Ladies Bingo will be held on November 17th. Current enrollment is 81 but we are expecting over 100. 13.The next Paint Night with Nando will be held on December 1st. Town of Mamaroneck Recreation Commission Meeting Minutes November 14, 2017 - Page 2 SUPERINTENDENT'S UPDATE CONTINUED: 14.The Fall Food Truck Festival was held on October 14th. It was estimated that 3,500 people participated in the day's events. 15.The Town of Mamaroneck Fire Department will be hosting their Annual Toy Drive at the ice rink on Sunday, December 10th. 16.The Carpino-Steffens Fields are scheduled to be aerated, top-dressed, seeded and fertilized the week of November 20th. The fields will then be closed until the beginning of April, 2018. 17.The Memorial Park tennis courts and park building have been winterized, closed and locked up for the winter. 18.The Recreation budget was presented on November 6th. The Town Board seems very pleased with our submission and no changes have been suggested at this time. 19.The Recreation staff is currently working on the 2018 Spring/Summer brochure. We plan to have the brochure out to residents in early March. 20.Permit renewals will be offered online starting in December. Those purchasing a new permit will still be required to come into the office for a photo. 21.The new speakers for the Ice Rink lobby will be installed in the next few weeks. These speakers will tie into the existing ones in the ice arena. 22.A proposal was received from Weston & Sampson for their professional engineering services for conducting a feasibility study on the Hommocks Pool. Ms. Fisher will keep the board updated with any new information. 23.The Recreation Department is working with the Town's Engineer and a private Structural Engineer regarding the expansion of the concession area. Ms. Fisher will keep the board updated with any new information. 24.There was no new information regarding the Early Morning Swim Program. We had 18 enrolled in the fall session and Masters had 40 swimmers. 25.We have received 2 quotes with a cost of approximately $1,800 - $2,400 to paint lines for a Pickleball court at Memorial Park. A stencil kit was also purchased to paint a court under the bridge tunnel bays. This project will start this spring when the weather permits. 26.Mr. George McNally, Director of Facilities and Grounds and Mrs. Bari Suman, Mamaroneck Schools Athletic Director were both contacted in regards to the Central School Tennis Courts. At this time, neither has any information regarding the future plans for these courts. MR. BRENDAN COLLINS, MAMARONECK YOUTH HOCKEY ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT: Mr. Brendan Collins, MYHA President presented the Recreation Commission Board with an overview of MYHA. MYHA has 188 players amongst 13 teams with 40 coaches, 16 managers and 12 players on scholarship. MYHA is made up of 85% residents and use 600 hours of ice time at the Hommocks Park Ice Rink and 60 hours of ice time at other facilities. Mr. Collins has also suggested some additional rink improvements such as providing permanent benches in the high school varsity locker rooms and to make the existing benches wider. The new electronic sign in the lobby of the ice rink is a great addition but he would also like some additional signage in the rear of the ice rink. Mr. Collins is very pleased with the strong bond between MYHA and the Recreation House League program and is very excited to see the program grow. Town of Mamaroneck Recreation Commission Meeting Minutes November 14, 2017 - Page 3 SUPERINTENDENT'S UPDATE CONTINUED: REQUEST FROM DAN DEMASI: Mr. Dan DeMasi, organizer of the Adult Ice Breaker Hockey Tournament has requested donated ice time for their fundraising tournament on April 26th — 29th All proceeds will go to the Hommocks Park Ice Rink Locker-Room Trust Fund Account. On a motion by Chairman Druker, seconded by Commissioner Sigel, the request was unanimously approved.
