HomeMy WebLinkAbout2015_11_10 Recreation Commission Minutes TOWN OF MAMARONECK RECREATION COMMISSION MEETING MINUTES November 10, 2015 PRESENT: James Druker, Chairman Robert Morello Nathalie Orans William Paonessa Rita Plansky Susan Sigel ALSO PRESENT: Jill Fisher, Superintendent of Recreation Jaine Elkind Eney, Town Board Liaison Eileen Puleo, Commission Secretary EXCUSED: Terry Rainaldi CALL TO ORDER: The meeting held in the VFW Lodge, 1288 Boston Post Road was called to order at 7:20 P.M. by Chairman Druker. ACCEPTANCE OF MEETING MINUTES: On a motion by Chairman Druker, seconded by Commissioner Plansky, the Meeting Minutes of September 29, 2015 were unanimously approved as amended. SUPERINTENDENT'S UPDATE: Ms. Fisher reported the following: 1. Session 1 of Skating School concluded on November 8th with an enrollment of 228. Last year's enrollment was at 210. 2. Session 2 of Skating School classes began on November 10th with an enrollment of 324. Last year's enrollment was at 287. 3. The House League Hockey program begins November 14th with a current enrollment of 121. 4. The Ice Rink's general attendance numbers are on target with last year's numbers. 5. Session 1 of Tot/Youth Swim Lessons participation numbers are similar to last years. 6. The Men's Basketball program is averaging $240/night in revenue. 7. All Tennis programs have concluded for this year. Tennis lessons will resume in May. 8. The Roller Coaster Physics program which was offered on the November 3rd, Superintendent's Conference Day was well attended. 9. Magic, Aviation and Jewelry making workshops were offered on Veteran's Day for youth participants. 10.The Adult Triathlon program is in its 4th year with 14 participants. 11.Our Groupon deal was so successful last year that we are running it again this year. To date we have sold 319 Groupons for $2,190. 12.The Future Rangers program in cooperation with the NY Rangers had 28 enrolled. Certificates and Jerseys were given to each participant. Town of Mamaroneck Recreation Commission Meeting Minutes November 10, 2015 - Page 2 SUPERINTENDENT'S UPDATE CONTINUED: 13.Aqua Zumba and Aqua Jog have 27 participants enrolled. 14.The Try Hockey For Free Day with the NY Rangers was fully enrolled with 255 participants. 15.Ladies Bingo was held on November 6th with 97 ladies participating. 16.The Carpino-Steffens Fields are scheduled to be aerated, top-dressed, seeded and fertilized the week of November 23rd. The fields will then be closed until the beginning of April, 2016. 17.The Memorial Park tennis courts and park building have been winterized, closed and locked up for the winter. 18.The Recreation budget was presented on October 30th. The Town Board seems very pleased with our submission and no changes have been suggested at this time. 19.The Recreation staff is currently working on the 2016 Spring/Summer brochure. We plan to have the brochure out to residents in early March. 20.As part of the 2016 budget request, we have asked to keep Mike Gibson our shared maintenance employee full-time in our department. 21.A copy of Joanne Aquilino's resignation letter was enclosed. Joanne has moved on to her new position as Superintendent of Mount Kisco Parks and Recreation. 22.The past three years of pool invoices were reviewed. The Town was overbilled by approximately $47,600. Jill Fisher and Tony Siligato, Town Comptroller reviewed the findings with Philip Silano, District Treasurer who agreed to adjust the invoice accordingly. Going forward, we will be billed monthly at an hourly rate for our use of the pool. The projected 2015-2016 rate is $170.55. 23.The Capital Projects that were approved for 2016 include the following: 1. Replace original sewer ejector pumps — Hommocks Pool. 2. Replace rink pathway and exterior pool lawn lights with new poles and LED heads. 3. Replace interior Community Room doors — Hommocks Ice Rink. 4. Re-surface mushroom pool — Hommocks Pool. 5. Open up brick wall separating the pool and lawn area — Hommocks Pool. 6. Hire architect/engineer to study the possibility of waterfront access for Kayaking - Hommocks Conservation area. 7. Replace 2 scoreboards — Hommocks Ice Rink. REQUEST FROM COLLEEN BAUCOM: Ms. Colleen Baucom, MYHA Mite Club Manager submitted a letter of request for a donation of ice time for the Seventh Annual "Turkey Shoot-Out Thanksgiving Tournament" to be held on Saturday, November 28th. After further discussion, Commissioner Paonessa, seconded by Commissioner Morello, made a motion to donate 2 hours of ice time to MYHA for this event. All in favor. REQUEST FROM DAN DEMASI: Mr. Dan DeMasi, organizer of the Adult Ice Breaker Hockey Tournament has requested use of the Hommocks Park Ice Rink for their fundraising tournament on April 28th — May 1st. All proceeds will go to the Hommocks Park Ice Rink Locker-Room Trust Fund Account. On a motion by Chairman Druker, seconded by Commissioner Paonessa, the request was unanimously approved. All in favor. Town of Mamaroneck Recreation Commission Meeting Minutes November 10, 2015 - Page 3 MAMARONECK BOARD OF EDUCATION: The Mamaroneck Board of Education has prepared a bond referendum for the improvements of Physical Education spaces within the district. However, the Hommocks Pool Locker Rooms have been removed from the initial list of facilities to renovate. The Commission expressed their concerns that these areas need to be addressed as well especially since they have a direct impact on our permit sales and the operation of the pool facility. After much discussion, the Commission passed the following resolution: RESOLUTION: WHEREAS the Town of Mamaroneck Recreation Commission resolves to urge the Town Board to exert whatever efforts it deems appropriate to encourage the Mamaroneck School Board to appropriate the funds necessary to effectuate the much needed refurbishment of the Hommocks Pool Locker Rooms.
