HomeMy WebLinkAbout2019_04_09 Recreation Commission Minutes TOWN OF MAMARONECK RECREATION COMMISSION MEETING MINUTES April 9, 2019 PRESENT: James Druker, Chairman Nathalie Orans William Paonessa Rita Plansky Terry Rainaldi Susan Sigel Brian Welsh ALSO PRESENT: Jill Fisher, Superintendent of Recreation Eileen Puleo, Commission Secretary CALL TO ORDER: The meeting held at the VFW Lodge was called to order at 7:15 P.M. by Commissioner Rainaldi. ACCEPTANCE OF MEETING MINUTES: On a motion by Commissioner Plansky, seconded by Commissioner Paonessa, the Meeting Minutes of March 12, 2019 were unanimously approved as submitted. SUPERINTENDENT'S UPDATE: Ms. Fisher reported the following: 1. Summer program registration is ongoing. Current registration numbers as of April 4th are as follows: Hommocks Playground - 316 Hommocks Extended Day - 80 Breakfast Club - 128 Camp Rockingstone - 43 Camp Monroe - 59 Swim Lessons - 139 Teen Travel - 72 2. Many of our spring programs are currently underway. 3. Spring Tennis programs will begin the second week of May. 4. The adult and youth Golf lessons will begin the end of April. Lessons will take place at Saxon Woods Golf Course. 5. Our first Outdoor Movie in the Park for this season will take place on Friday, May 17th. We will be showing "101 Dalmatians". 6. Session 5 of Skating School began on March 11th with 290 enrolled. Last year at this time, we had an enrollment of 255 participants. 7. The April calendar for the Hommocks Park Ice Rink is enclosed for your information. 8. The March ice rink attendance numbers for 2019 and 2018 are enclosed for your review. 9. A copy of the Fall/Winter Recreation House Hockey program survey results are enclosed for your review. We are pleased with this year's results and it appears that our extra efforts were well appreciated. 10.The youth Spring Hockey program began on Saturday, March 30th. Current enrollment is at 70 participants. Last year we had 90 participants enrolled at this time. 11.The Chess Wizard and Mad Science programs which were offered during the spring recess each had 9 children enrolled. Town of Mamaroneck Recreation Commission Meeting Minutes April 9, 2019 - Page 2 SUPERINTENDENT'S UPDATE CONTINUED: 12.The Ice Breaker Hockey Tournament will take place between May 2nd — May 5th. The net revenue will get deposited into the Hommocks Park Ice Rink Locker Room Trust Fund. 13.The 5th Annual 5K Run and Lil' Bunny Hop is scheduled for Sunday, April 28th Current enrollment is at 145. Last year we had 149 enrolled at this time. 14.The April Lifeguarding class has 9 participants. 15.The winter session of the Early Morning Swim program had 24 participants enrolled. The next session will run from May 1st to August 30th 16.A Family Paint Party is scheduled with Nando on Friday, May 10th 17.Currently, 11 camp scholarships have been received and are under review. 18.The spring maintenance on the Hommocks Fields was completed on April 1st The opening date is tentatively scheduled for April 8th. 19.Recreation Department staff members have been busy recruiting and hiring employees for the various summer positions. 20.There is no new information to report on the installation of the solar panels on the roof of the Hommocks Park Ice Rink. 21.The Town is working with the County Civil Service Department with regards to the hiring for the new Recreation Assistant position. Hopefully, we will be able to advertise and begin recruitment soon. 22.Congratulations to Eileen Puleo who was promoted to Senior Recreation Leader on March 19th 23.Alana Kelton, Skating School Director has informed us that she will be stepping down as Skating School Director at the end of this season. Alana has been with us for 30 years. We have promoted Sara-Beth Carbonaro who has been an instructor at the Hommocks for the past 14 years to assume the role as Skating School Director. Alana will stay on as an instructor with us. A copy of Sara- Beth's resume is enclosed. 24.We are in the process of getting Memorial Park ready for the season. The restrooms are getting a fresh coat of paint, new toilets and partitions are being installed. The sand box will be topped off with fresh sand. Eventually we plan to sand and re-stain the park benches. We are also in the process of getting proposals together for the cost of replacing the playground sets at the park which are approximately 20 years old. 25.On Wednesday, April 10th, Mr. Daniel Tenney, Weston and Sampson will be on site at the Ice Rink to take field measurements and to discuss any possible code compliance concerns. A copy of the Proposed Schedule of Work is enclosed for your review. 26.Enclosed is a copy of the Resolution that was established by the Recreation Commission at the March meeting and given to the Town Administrator, Stephen V. Altieri. REQUEST FROM VILLAGE OF LARCHMONT, VILLAGE OF MAMARONECK AND CO-OP CAMP FOR SUMMER POOL USAGE: All submitted pool requests were reviewed. The Village of Mamaroneck is requesting to start their season early this year and begin use of the pool on June 27th and June 28th starting at 9:00 A.M. Superintendent Fisher stated that since the pool does open until noon on these two days that we would be unable to accommodate this request. The Commission unanimously approved all requests with the stipulation that the Village of Mamaroneck would not start until Monday, July 1st Town of Mamaroneck Recreation Commission Meeting Minutes April 9, 2019 - Page 3 SUPERINTENDENT'S UPDATE CONTINUED: REQUEST FROM JENNIFER POLLAK, AQUATICS DIRECTOR: On behalf of the Town of Mamaroneck Swim Club, Jennifer Pollak, Aquatics Director has requested to host the Annual Invitational Swim Meet on Friday, July 19th at the Hommocks Pool. The event would have a starting time of 5:30 P.M. and end by 7:00 P.M. at the Hommocks Pool and would require closing down the middle section of the pool for public swimming during that time. The outdoor pools and lawn area would remain open to the public and patrons would be encouraged to watch the meet. A BBQ would be held offering food for purchase for all pool patrons. Commissioner Rainaldi made a motion to approve this request, seconded by Commissioner Plansky. All in favor. ADJOURNMENT: There being no further business to come before the Commission, on a motion by Chairman Druker, seconded by Commissioner Rainaldi, the meeting adjourned at 8:10 P.M.
