HomeMy WebLinkAbout2018_03_20 Recreation Commission Minutes TOWN OF MAMARONECK RECREATION COMMISSION MEETING MINUTES March 20, 2018 PRESENT: Dr. Robert Morello Nathalie Orans William Paonessa Rita Plansky Susan Sigel EXCUSED: James Druker, Chairman Terry Rainaldi ALSO PRESENT: Jill Fisher, Superintendent of Recreation Jaine Elkind Eney, Town Board Liaison Eileen Puleo, Commission Secretary CALL TO ORDER: The meeting held at the VFW Lodge was called to order at 7:15 P.M. by Commissioner Paonessa. ACCEPTANCE OF MEETING MINUTES: On a motion by Commissioner Paonessa, seconded by Commissioner Plansky, the Meeting Minutes of February 20, 2018 were unanimously approved. CORRESPONDENCE: 1. An email from Ms. Bari Suman, MHS Athletic Director was received regarding the Early Morning Swim Program. The Mamaroneck School District will honor the sharing and dividing of the pool fee three ways during the 6:00 — 7:30 A.M. time slot for the 2017-2018 school year. This arrangement will be re-evaluated in June 2018. SUPERINTENDENT'S UPDATE: Ms. Fisher reported the following: 1. Brochures were mailed out the week of February 22nd. Registration for Camp began on Monday, March 12th. All forms are available on the Recreation Department's website. 2. Registration for Session 5 of Skating School began on March 12th 3. Tennis permit applications have been mailed out to all 2017 permit holders. 4. General admission attendance numbers for February 2016 and 2017 are enclosed for review. Attendance was up by 1,000 visitors compared to last year. 5. A copy of the March Hommocks Park Ice Rink calendar is enclosed for your information. The Easter Bunny will be skating at the rink on March 25th 6. Winter programs are ending in March. Spring sessions are set to begin in April. 7. The Hommocks pool will be closed over the spring break, March 30th —April 8th for annual maintenance. Notifications have been posted. 8. A flyer for the Annual Ice Breaker Hockey Tournament is enclosed for your information. 9. To date, $16,000 has been received in Groupon payments. Last year at this time, we had received $20,500. 10.Our 4th Annual 5K Run and Lil' Bunny Run is scheduled to take place on Sunday, April 22, 2018. 11.A Chess program and a Mad Science program are being offered during the spring break. 12.A copy of the spring Youth Hockey Program flier is enclosed for your information. Spring Hockey begins on April 14th 13.The House League Hockey Program concluded on March 17th. A program evaluation is being sent out to all participants to provide us with additional feedback to plan for next year's program. A flier is enclosed for your information. 15.Current camp numbers are as follows: • Hommocks Camp — 265 • Camp Monroe — 44 • Pre School Camp — 42 • Teen Travel Session 1 — 40 • Teen Travel Session 2 — 31 16.Maintenance on the fields was scheduled to take place the week of March 19th This work has been delayed due to poor field/weather conditions. 17.The Memorial Park Tennis Courts are scheduled to open on April 1st weather permitting. Park attendants will be on duty starting May 1st. We will be performing some needed repairs to the tennis courts in early May. We will also be adding lines for Pickleball on one court and under the tunnels. 18.We have been notified from the school district that we will be given Central School this summer for the site of our Pre-School Camp. 19.The expansion to the Ice Rink/Pool Concession area is currently on schedule. Robert Wasp, Town Engineer is overseeing this project. Copies of the engineer's drawings are enclosed. 20.A copy of the 2017 Year End Financial Report is enclosed for review. 21.The Ice Rink lost their phone system, sound system and Wi-Fi for seven days due to the March Nor'easter storm. 22.Ms. Fisher will be meeting with architects from Weston and Sampson regarding the rink locker room/shower addition. She will keep the board updated on this matter. 23.A copy of the final report for the Kayak Feasibility Study is enclosed for review. The report is being shared with the Town Board at their March 21st meeting. FACILITY REQUESTS FOR USE OF CARPINO-STEFFENS FIELDS: Facility requests for use of the Carpino-Steffens Fields were submitted from Ms. Anita Babikian, Larchmont/Mamaroneck Football Clinic (formerly LJSL), Mr. Peter Bennett, Larchmont/Mamaroneck Youth Lacrosse and Mr. Matt Popoli, Westchester Soccer Club. On a motion by Commissioner Paonessa, seconded by Commissioner Orans, the commission unanimously approved this request. CLOSING OF CHILDREN'S CORNER: Ms. Fisher reported that Children's Corner, which provides before and after school care is closing at the end of the 2018 school year. Local residents have approached the Recreation Department to inquire if the Department could take over this roll of childcare. The Recreation Department is not a Licensed Day Care provider and would not be able to assist in operating this type of program. NEW YORK RANGER'S END OF SEASON PARTY: The New York Rangers have asked all rinks participating in the Learn to Play program to participate in an end of the Season Party. The date and time is yet to be determined. The Party would need to be offered during a public session and participants of the Learn to Play program would be allowed to skate for free. Family members accompanying participants would be required to pay prevailing admission fees. The NY Rangers would have alumni players on site and provide free giveaways. Since this event could provide additional exposure for the Hommocks Park Ice Rink with little cost, the Commission is being asked to endorse this event. On a motion by Commissioner Paonessa, seconded by Commissioner Morello, the commission unanimously approved this request. ADJOURNMENT: There being no further business to come before the Commission, on a motion by Commissioner Paonessa, seconded by Commissioner Morello, the meeting adjourned at 7:55 P.M.
