1990_05_09 Beautification Commitee Minutes
Date: May 9, 1990 Subject: Minutes - Town of Mamaroneck Beautification Committee Meeting, May 1, 1990 Present: Kathleen Tracy O'Flinn, Town Councilwoman Majorie Cohen R'E/'© Christine Schellhamner PAM' 11 1990 Valerie Puglisi TRICIAADiCI T°WN CdR. 10 Paula Krenkel MAMARONE- Mary McGee N.Y. Maxine Steffens Phyllis Bers, Liaison - Village of Larchmont Beautification Committee Absent: Peggy Perrin The meeting commenced at 9:15 A.M. Valerie Puglisi passed around the table some photographs she had taken of the two islands on Murray Avenue and other islands in neighboring communities for possible ideas. Margie Cohen then made some suggestions for plantings for the two Murray Avenue Islands which included euyanamus, liatris, coreopsis, artemisia, blue danube and alyssum A lively discussion followed over the merits of foundation plantings, i. e. evergreens, perennials and annuals; whether we should plant for a year round look or a limited season; whether the redesigned islands should each take on a different look or have a similar "signature". A general consensus was reached over the design for the three islands (2 islands on Murray Avenue below Edgewood Avenue and one island on Forest Avenue between Murray Avenue and Daymon Terrace). There would be a flowering bed at each end of each island of yellow climax marigold with a "U" shaped border of blue ageratum. The flower bed would extend from just inside the curb to the first tree. Junipers would then be planted (1 plant per sq. yd.) parallel to each curb and 1 to 1 1/2 back from the curb. It was felt that a Jupiter with blue foliage was preferred. Under consideration were procumbens nana, bar harbor and wiltonii. Pinebark mulch would cover the rest of the beds. See illustrations attached for design scheme. It was agreed that we should submit this design scheme for a cost estimate and approval. We then focused on the intersection at Murray Avenue and Weaver Street. Peggy Perrin reported in her written summary that the island was constructed of 4 inches of asphalt over concrete. According to the Town Administrator, Steve Altieri, it may be possible to build up the island with concrete planters giving a tiered effect after the asphalt is broken and removed. This would give the plantings the needed depth and drainage space. Steve had also previously suggested a 3 foot -2- walkway around the perimeter of the island. Plantings could include shrubs and flowers. Committee members will give further thought to possible plantings. This will most likely be a long-term project because of the labor and expense involved. Approvals may also be sought from the State since Weaver Street is a State road. Other business included a discussion of the school's responsibility for the greenway between the sidewalk and the stonewall. Also Steve Altieri advised that he would visit the waterfall with Tom Leddy later this Spring to determine which trees require pruning. Chris Schellhammer was advised to forward the check in memory of Inez Condor to Steve Altieri. Meeting was adjourned at 11:00 . KOF:lr c:Supervisor Town Board Town Administrator
