The meeting commenced at 9:15 A.M.
Following a motion, the minutes of the meetings of May 1 and May 7 were
approved.
At the time of this meeting, work was being completed on the plantings
for the three islands (two Murray Avenue and one on Forest Avenue).Tam
Junipers were selected for Murray Avenue and Blue Pacific Junipers were
chosen for Forest Avenue. Beds of yellow marigolds bordered by blue
ageratum framed the ends of each island. A new Oak was planted on the
lower Murray Avenue island to replace a dying tree at that location.
A11 committee members praised the work of Tom Leddy and his crew.
As previously discussed, it is hoped that next Spring we can direct the
planting of some flowering shrubs along the middle of the Forest Avenue
island.
Discussion followed on the possibility of designing and erecting Town
of Mamaroneck signs at key entrances to the Town. It was agreed that
they should be attractive and understated. It was suggested that
perhaps the Town's Indian Head Logo might be appropriate. There was
not complete agreement as to how the sign should read and whether
Larchmont should be mentioned. Further discussions will be held at a
future meeting.
Bill Zimmermann attended the meeting to request the Committee's
assistance on several future projects. He indicated that both of the
new signs for the Hammocks Rink (on the Boston Post Road and at the
parking lot entrance) could be made even more attractive with some
floral plantings beneath them. After discussing their locations,
heights and other pertinent information, the Committee recommended the
following: at the corner of the Boston Post Road & Hommocks Road - a
6 x 10' oval floral bed of marigolds (10-12" h) surrounded by blue
ageratum (this would bring the bed approximately 2-3' beyond the sign);
at the entrance to the parking lot - a 6 x 10' oval floral bed of
impatience in a bright color preferably pink or coral. Bill stated
that he could oversee the watering of these flowers. Bill also stated
-2-
that he felt there were sufficient funds in his budget to purchase the
flowers which the committee estimated at under $200.00. Councilwoman
O'Flinn agreed to discuss this with Town Administrator Altieri to see
if it was possible for the Highway Department to fit it into their
schedule. Bill also used this opportunity to explain that he has
several wooden park signs that will eventually be placed and he would
also like the Committee to make some suggestions for plantings at the
base of these signs. Future plans of his also include the possibility
of plantings around the Hommocks pool area. The Committee agreed to
discuss these future plans in more detail next Fall if Bill would
contact the Committee then.
The intersection at Murray Avenue and Weaver Street was then
discussed. The possibility of a three foot brick walkway around its
perimeter was mentioned; also the planting of a Honey Locust in the
center was mentioned. It was agreed that detailed measurements of the
existing island and planter would be needed before specific plans for
shrubs, trees and flowers could be drawn up. Phyllis Bers volunteered
to do the honors.
Other miscellaneous business included the following:
A request by Committee members to have the Highway Department clean
up litter accumulating at the corner of Madison & Maxwell Avenues.
A reminder by Committee members for the Town to plant the weeping
cherry tree at the Duck Pond in memory of Inez Condon. .
The Garden Club has filled planters on Madison Avenue.
A question was raised as to whether Nathan's will be required to
plant some shrubs or trees as part of their renovation.
The meeting was adjourned at 10:40 A.M.
