Phyllis Bers, Liaison, Village of Larchmont Beautification Committee Marjorie Cohen Absent: Peggy Perrin Paula Krenkel The meeting commenced at 9:20 A.M. A correction to the minutes of the May 22 meeting was requested. The minutes should read: "Maxine Steffens and Phyllis Bers volunteered to measure the island at Weaver Street and Murray Avenue." Following a motion, the minutes, as corrected, were approved. With the completion of the islands on Murray Avenue and Forest Avenue, the committee discussed submitting an entry form for the Westchester Beautification Committee Awards Program. "Before" and "After" photographs will be included as well as a written description of the project. It was suggested that Ann Zaccardo be contacted for any possible assistance in completing the entry form. Ann serves on the Westchester Beautification Committee, Kathleen Tracy O'Flinn will complete the entry form and forward to the Cooperative Extension. Some committee members suggested that the Town also consider submitting an entry form for the Duck Pond Restoration project. Next on the agenda was a discussion of plans for the Murray Avenue/ Weaver Street intersection. Phyllis Bers presented her sketch providing detailed measurements. The committee then proceeded to draw up a wish list for the island. It included a plan whereby the asphalt surrounding the existing planter would be pulled up. The existing planter would be raised an additional eight inches . Another eight inch wall, approximately ten feet out, would surround the existing planter. This would create another raised bed. Four to five feet of laid brick or blocks would surround the outside of the lower bed creating a walkway for pedestrians around the perimeter of the island. Existing shrubs in the center triangular planter would be replaced with a six to seven foot slow growing blue spruce surrounded by variegated cascading euonymous at twelve to eighteen inches of height at each angle of the planter with cotoneaster planted along the sides of that triangle. On the next lower level blue juniper would be planted along the base of the higher planter with cotoneaster creating another likr • 2 outside triangle. Annuals would create a final outside triangle. Valerie Puglisi offered to prepare a drawing to scale of these suggested plantings. This layout will assist in further discussions and possibly further modifications. The Committee will attempt to finalize a design by next Fall for the State's review and blessing. Materials for each planter (whether concrete or stone) and brickwork (whether individual bricks or square blocks) have not yet been determined. A preliminary sketch is attached. There was further discussion on the proposed Town of Mamaroneck signs with no agreement as to how they would read, i.e., whether "Larchmont" should appear on the signs. The matter has been tabled until next Fall. Other business included the following: 1. A request from Christine Schellhammer to prune the trees overhanging the falls in Larchmont Gardens. 2. An inquiry from Mary McGee as to whether the Town would be able to water the flowers planted by the Garden Club, which are in planters on Madison Avenue. The restaurant next door did volunteer to water them, however, when the planting was first done. 3. An inquiry from Valeri Puglisi as to who owns the property (the Town or privately owned) at the corner of Seton and Rockingstone which is in need of a mowing. The meeting was adjourned at 10:30 A.M. The next meeting will be held in September. encl. sketch c: w/encl Supervisor TB Town Clerk Town Administrator Tom Leddy • x [ rig ti 1 1 t 1 W ' 1 •1 I dk' Cannr_._ .(S i I 9\ 1 )EcA5-6C;;, c 3-l- i 1 i it\- ) .,. , .
