The meeting commenced at 9:00 A.M.
Mrs. O'Flinn read the June 15th letter written by Richard Beninati
complimenting those involved in the replanting of the island on Forest
and Murray Avenues.
The first and .only item on the agenda was continued discussion of the
island at the Murray Avenue/Weaver Street intersection. Valerie
Puglisi's diagram with measurements and suggested plantings was passed
out. Again Kathy O'Flinn emphasized that this drawing was just a
starting point for further discussion and this particular design was
not engraved in stone. Kathy O'Flinn suggested that since this project
may be costly, the committee should seek a corporate donors) and
contributions from interested community organizations. The Larchrnont
Chamber of Commerce was mentioned as a possible source of funds. Local
banks were also named. Once the committee has a firer idea of design
and cost it could seek contributions.
The pro's and con's of various design styles were discussed including a
formal vs informal design. It was generally agreed that the new design
should be eye-catching for passing vehicular traffic and should allow
for year round interest.
Some of the shrubs mentioned, which would provide winter color,
included euonymous, andromeda, ivy, cotoneaster, mugo pine and
juniper. Flowers discussed included liatris, narcissus, daffodils, day
lilies and coleus.
Since any plantings would require some depth, a raised bed(s) would
necessitate walks of stone, brick, railroad ties or some other
material. Each committee member was asked to take one of the diagrams
and sketch, for the next meeting, at least one design that she felt
would be appropriate for the location, keeping in mind low maintenance.
The next meeting was scheduled for Tuesday, October 16, 1990 at 9:00 AM
