The meeting commenced at 9:00 A.M.
Minutes of the October 19th meeting were approved subject to one
correction. MS. Grossman's first name is Joan.
Mrs. O'Flinn advised the board as to whom she had contacted in an
attempt to locate an anchor or a similar nautical item. On City Island
she visited Trader John's Nortrind Institute and spoke with Marilyn
Sinclair of the local Gamlen Club. Only Trader John's had an anchor,
but the asking price was $1,000. Committee members also contacted
Robert E. Derecktor Yacht Builders, Mc Michael Yachts, Nichols Yachts,
Beckwith Pt., Mamaroneck Beach & Yacht Club and the Coast Gard at Ft.
Totten. Christine Schellhammer reported before the meeting that she
had visited Brewers and will continue to stay in touch with them.
A discussion followed with regard to the type of wall. One estimate
for a 1 1/2 foot high fieldstone and mortar wall amounted to $12,900.
This was for 200 feet of wall and included removal of the black top
five feet around the perimeter. Another estimate for a cinderblock
stone-faced wall 1 1/2 feet high totalled $10,000. A third estimate
was for a 12 inch wide cinder block wall 1 1/2 feet high covered with
cement and included inner steel rods and weep holes for $5,000. It was
mentioned that a recent measuring of the island by Valerie Puglisi
found that the wall should only be 147 feet. Marjorie Cohen suggested
the possibility of using old telephone poles cut to the necessary
heights (alternating 1 1/2 feet, 2 feet and 2 1/2 feet) . Arranged
vertically and adding roping it could suggest pier pilings and would
form a wall for a planting bed. The committee agreed that it should
pursue the possibility of securing old poles from New York Telephone
Company. Mrs. O'Flinn will contact New York Telephone. In the
interim, the Committee should continue consider alternatives for a wall
if the Telephone Company does not come through.
