SUBJECT: Minutes - Town of Mamaroneck ~ Beautification Committee Monday, June 22, 1992 PRESENT: Valerie Puglisi Phyllis Bers, Liaison, Village of Larchmont, Beautification Committee Christine Schellhamner Mary McGee Peggy Perrin Kathleen Tracy O'Flinn, Town Councilwoman The meeting commenced at 9:30 AM. There was a general discussion of the recent improvements at Memorial Park especially in the pond area off Vine Road. The Committee was pleased with the pruning and tree removal at that site. A Kousa dogwood also has been planted near the pond. The Committee was advised that the pond would be cleaned out soon. At the Committee's request Steve Altieri was able to secure a cost estimate for restoring the running brook at the pond. Councilwoman 0' Flinn told the Committee that after inspection, it was determined that ,`, many of the pipes would have to be replaced, a new pump installed and electric work would be required at an estimated cost of $2,000. Councilwoman O'Flinn then suggested the possibility of an aerator in lieu of recirculating water by means of a running brook. The estimated cost would be $300 to $400. A geyser type or a half sphere could be chosen to recirculate the pond's water. The Committee enthusiastically supported the idea of a half sphere aerator and suggested that funds for its purchase be deducted frac the Beautification Trust Fund. The Committee was asked for its ideas in solving an erosion problem on the hill in Memorial Park next to the azalea bank. It was agreed that the Town should try the burlap type of seeding material that is effectively used on slopes along newly constructed roads. It was also mentioned that the azalea bank is filled with weeds, sane of than quite tall. The Town Highway crews should see to their removal and be cautioned not to prune the azaleas. Councilwoman O'Flinn advised the Committee that Doris Stockman has graciously offered perennials from her garden for use at the Manorial Park pond. Valerie Puglisi and Phyllis Bers said they would join her to visit Doris Stockman's garden and decide which and how many plants could be removed for transplanting. Since this is not the best time of year to transplant, it was suggested that transplanting wait till the Fall with the assistance of the Town Highway crews. -2- During discussion of the Rouken Glen Island off Murray Avenue, it was agreed that curbing similar to the new island at Murray Avenue/Weaver Street would be appropriate. Mr. Altieri has advised that he would investigate locating some more curbing. An update on the Town's tree planting program was provided by Councilwoman O'Flinn who advised that approximately 20 trees had been planted this Spring. A letter will be going out shortly to residents who have had a tree planted in front of their home asking for their cooperation in caring for it. Councilwoman O'Flinn told the Committee that she is planning for a Tree Inventory Survey to be performed this coming Fall with the help of volunteers. She asked that the CO mittee advise their friends and neighbors of this survey and try to recruit volunteers. It can only be done if we get enough volunteers. A tree inventory survey will not only provide the Town with the number of street trees but with their distribution and condition, the variety and number of species, maintenance needs and size of trees. It will enable the Town Board to improve its tree management programs and plan budgets for planting, removal and maintenance. Before closing, the Committee asked that the tree on the first island upon entering Larchmont Gardens (Myrtle Blvd.) be considered for removal and that two spruces be planted, one at either end, to duplicate the design on the next island. The cost of the Spruces could be deducted from the Beautification Trust Fund. It was also suggested that the trees in front of the stone columns be examined for possible pruning or removal. Daffodils might be considered for that location but that decision would wait till a later meeting. The -ting was adjourned at 10:15 AM. ; 4.9 Ka een Tracy 'Flinn Councilwoman KTOF/lr c: Supervisor & Town Board Town Clerk Town Administrator
