The meeting began promptly at 9:30 AM. First on the agenda was a
discussion of the ornamental grass garden Joanne Grossman proposed for
the park located at the Palmer Avenue and Weaver Street intersection.
After a general discussion of the proposed planting, all of the various
grasses listed were discussed along with illustrations provided. by
Joanne Grossman. The following questions were raised by the mailers:
1. Are these clump forming grasses or spreading grasses?
2. How do we prevent weeds between the grasses?
3. How should the soil be prepared?
4. how large a bed is proposed?
5. Do the pampass grasses need to be staked?
6. What do these grasses look like - Pennisetum Hameln, Calamagrostis
K.F. and drawt bamboo?
7. Is the Miscanthus invasive?
Councilwoman O'Flinn promised to get the answers to these questions
from Joanne Grossman.
The Committee again discussed the possibility of planting spring and
summer flowers on the triangular island across frau the park if the
Town is to proceed with the grass garden.
Several varieties of summer annuals were suggested for the Town
islands. At Forest Avenue/Murray Avenue, pink impatiens were again
recommended since they did so well last year. For the islands on
Murray Avenue below I:dgewood, dwarf marigolds with purple saliva were
recorunendext. f;ome dwarf marigold varieties include Marietta and
iutterbal l.
The Committee also indicated the desire to contribute some ivy to cover
the duck pond sound barrier. It was agreed that $200 should be
deducted from the Beautification Committer: Tree fund for this purpose.
The meeting was adjourned at 10:30 AM.
