The Committee members discussed last night's presentation of the ornamental grass garden before the Howell Park Association. Since the Howell Park Association did not express any support for such a grass garden, it was suggested that they visit the grass garden in New Rochelle off Palmer Avenue. They could then express their opinion on the proposed grass garden to Sandy Bernstein (a member of the Howell Park Association) who will be in contact with Mrs. O'Flinn. The Beautification Committee will postpone any further action on plans for the park at Weaver & Palmer Avenue for at least another two weeks until it hears from Mrs. Bernstein. Mrs. O'Flinn advised the Committee that on Tuesday, May 18, David Chinnery of the Cooperative Extension met her at the Forest Avenue Island to examine the juniper damage. He stated that the damage could have been caused by weather , salt, mites or disease. He took plant samples and soil samples which he will forward to Cornell for analysis. The Committee agreed to await the report including his suggestions for suitable plantings. Incidentally, he advised that this year junipers in Westchester County succumbed to winter kill in large numbers. He suggested that the junipers on Murray Avenue be trimmed of their damaged branches which was probably due to salt contact but again he took a soil sample for a oanplete analysis. Mrs. Puglisi and Mrs. O'Flinn have offered to do the pruning of the damaged junipers. Mrs. O'Flinn asked the Committee to suggest names of those who might be willing to formulate a program of contributions for tree planting similar to "Trees for Rye". Phyllis Bets volunteered and Valerie Puglisi suggested that Joe and Jeanne Anderson (84 Edgewood Avenue) be contacted. An update was given on the following: Approval of DEC/SBA tree grant Westchester Conference Beautification Award Tree City Growth Award Completion of Tree Inventory Report Arbor Day plantings Duck Pond fencing Train Station Pond recirculating system The meeting was adjourne`d at 10:30 AM.
