HomeMy WebLinkAbout1993_12_02 Beautification Commitee Minutes DATE: December 2, 1993 SUBJECT: Minutes - Town of Mamaroneck Beautification Committee Monday, November 17, 1993 PRESENT: Valerie Puglisi Eleanor Wilhelm Phyllis Bers Peggy Perrin • Kathleen Tracy O'Flinn, Town Councilwoman The meeting commenced at 8:35. A number of possible projects for Spring'94 were discussed. Fencing: Most of the hedges along Myrtle Boulevard in Memorial Park have died over the last several years so that there are very little still standing. It was suggested that a split rail fence be installed along Myrtle Boulevard & Maple Street (across fram Carl's) . This would mirror the fencing across the street bordering the parking lot. Either roses or same other climbing flowers are being considered for planting along the fence. At the Committee's request, Mrs. O'Flinn will get same cost estimates for the fence. Triangle at North Chatsworth, Rockingstone & Mountain Avenues: After sane discussion, the Committee decided that because this island is in a highly visible area it would like to focus on putting a planting plan together for this site. All Committee members are asked to visit the site. Mrs. Wilhelm will take same measurements so that planning can begin at the next meeting. The Committee will focus their efforts on the lower portion of the island away frau the trees, keeping traffic sight lines in mind. Triangle at Seton Road (off Rockingstone Avenue) : Discussion of this island was pranpted by a request of a Seton Road resident, Karen Reiter. Mrs. O'Flinn had previously visited the location and discussed planting with Mrs. Reiter. Mrs. O'Flinn had suggested that this could be a cooperative effort with the Tann providing a plan and necessary labor while the residents would contribute financially. Mrs. Reiter offered to do the fund raising if the Tann Beautification Committee would consider this as a project for '94. The Committee saw this as an opportunity to coordinate a beautification project at relatively little expense to the Town. Plans will begin at the next meeting so that we can give Mrs. Reiter a cost estimate and fund raising goal. Island on Forest Avenue between Daymon Terrace & Murray Avenue: The difficulty with growing junipers at this shady location was previously discussed. After further discussion the Committee decided that the junipers could be moved next Spring to a sunnier location (perhaps the Seton Road triangle) . Mulch would then cover the entire island except the ends where we would continue to plant annuals in the late Spring. -2- Erosion on hill off Murray Avenue in Memorial Park: The hill below the flagpole has been experiencing terrible erosion. So much so that whenever there is a heavy downpour, dirt washes on to the Murray Avenue sidewalk exposing tree roots on the hill. The Committee agreed that the planting of Baltica ivy and cotoneaster or euonymous fortunii radicans along the lower part of the hill and grass seed along the upper part of the hill could curtail the erosion. Mrs. Wilheim will visit the site and estimate the number of plantings needed so that the committee can provide a cost estimate for budgetary purposes. Park at Palmer Avenue & Weaver Street: Last year at a Howell Park Neighborhood Association meeting, the residents indicated that they would like to have same input with regard to any changes' done in this park. Since no one has yet contacted the Committee, Mrs. Wilheim will meet with the residents at their holiday party to see if she can generate same interest and volunteers to pursue it. Select Annuals for Spring Planting: Committee members will give this same further consideration and will make recommendations at the next meeting. An early order should ensure that the Tawn gets what is requested. It was mentioned by Mrs. O'Flinn that all of the above potential projects are subject to the Highway Department's schedule and to budgetary approvals. The Committee also aksed if they could have some input with the Hammocks Park Apartments landscaping plans. The meeting adjourned at 11:00 A.M.
