Beautification Committee
Tuesday, February 1, 1994
PRESENT: Valerie Puglisi

Kathleen Tracy O'Flinn, Town Councilwoman
The meeting commenced at 9: 30 am. in Conference Room A.
Councilwoman O'Flinn gave an update to all those present as to
what had been discussed at the last meeting.
The Committee then discussed the proposed plantings for the
hill along Murray Avenue in Memorial Park. It was agreed that the
combination of the cotoneaster, azaleas and junipers would be the
most suitable planting for the site. Planting would be done in two
stages with the area below the flagpole planted this Spring and the
area beyond the last azaleas planted Spring '95. The number of
plantings will have to be determined when the area is cleared of
ice.
Next the Committee discussed the island at Rockingstone and
North Chatsworth . After further ideas were expressed, it was
agreed, hydrangea would be a better choice than forsythia
because of its late summer into fall flowering and because its
structure is different than both the bridal wreath and the
cinquefoil . Suggested plantings, arranged in large clusters would
include Spirea bumalda in pink (Anthony Waterer or Froebel) . It
grows to three feet; Hydrangea quercifolia which has a dark oak-
like leaf; and potentilla fruticosa cinquefoil in yellow.
The Committee then suggested ideas for the island at Seton
Road. Councilwoman O'Flinn reminded those present that the
neighborhood is willing to raise up to $1, 000 for the improvement
of this island. It was also mentioned that the junipers that are
not doing well on the Forest Avenue island could be transplanted
to this location where they will get more sun.

At this point the Committee decided to do some site
inspections and proceeded to the island at Rockingstone and North
Chatsworth. Upon further inspection it was suggested that both
pine trees should be removed since one had been previously "topped"
and the other is apparently dying. It was also agreed that
two large clusters should be planted with each containing
approximately 3 hydrangea, 3 spirea and 5 potentilla. Mulch would
surround each cluster so that lawnmowers could easily mow the grass
without damaging the plantings.
The Committee then moved on to Seton Road and after discussion
of traffic sight lines, suggested that plantings include
approximately seven andromeda surrounded by Spirea, cinquefoil
and junipers. The remaining unplanted bed would be covered with
mulch. There would be no grass on the island.
Sketches of these two islands with the specific number of
plants will have to be prepared over the next several weeks.
Due to the time, Memorial Park was not visited but the site
inspection will be done at the next meeting.
The next scheduled meeting is Wednesday March 9 at 9 : 30 am in
Conference Room A.
