The Committee discussed the projects plannned for this Spring as Eleanor Wilheim sketched alternative planting arrangements. North Chatsworth/Rockingstone Island The Committee discussed the location and sizes of the proposed planting areas. The primary concerns were to maintain traffic sight lines, avoid placement near the existing telephone pole and tree roots. The possibility of two large groupings of approximately 15' X 15' was discussed with each grouping containing 3 spirea, 5 hydrangea and 5 potentilla. Eleanor Wilheim offered to revisit the site so that she could suggest moving the planting location to a preferable spot perhaps a bit above the sketched site . Using the Roth Nurseries estimates the Committee was able to determine an approximate cost but that will be subject to any design change. Memorial Park As previously agreed, the Committee wishes to plant the area below the flagpole where the erosion is most severe. Perhaps in Spring '95 additional planting would be affordable in the area closer to the walkway. It is estimated that the following would be needed: 7 cotoneaster, 9 azaleas and 10 junipers. An appropriate cost would be $330 . The Committee also wishes to proceed with split rail fencing along Myrtle Blvd. Councilwoman O'Flinn will get an estimate. Seton Road This project is to be funded with residents' contributions. After determining that the andromeda might not be suitable as an evergreen because of its slow growing characteristics, Eleanor Wilheim offered to investigate whether an appropriate ilex might be found. The arrangement might include: 7 ilex, 3 spirea, 3 hydrangea and 8 potentilla. The cost of these shrubs is estimated at $460. Additional costs are anticipated for landscaping material to prevent weeds, mulch, peat and soil improvement and possibly narcissus bulbs. The Committee also discussed the possibility of residents planting annuals if they were so inclined and were committed to their maintenance. After Eleanor Wilheim determines if an appropriate ilex is available, she will complete a sketch. Councilwoman O'Flinn will firm up the cost estimate and determine when the Highway Department can do the planting so that Karen Reiter can be informed and proceed with her fundraising. Annuals for Parks and Islands After much discussion the Committee agreed on a combination of pick and coral impatiens with a dusty miller border on the Forest Avenue Island. At the sunnier locations yellow marigolds (dwarf varieties: Marietta or Butterball) with white ageratum border were suggested. These location include: Murray Ave Island, Myrtle Blvd/No. Chatsworth Island, and Palmer Ave/Weaver Street Park. In addition, at the Palmer Ave/Weaver Street park, a dozen red carras should be planted in the center of the arrangement. The Committee was also advised of the Town's proposed tree planting for this Spring along the Boston Post Road. Councilwoman O'Flinn asked if anyone was interested in helping her pick a site for a tree to be planted in Memorial Park in memory of Thomas Aitcheson, former parks department superintendent. Norma Perciasepe volunteered. The Committee reiterated its request that it have input into the landscaping design for the Hommocks Park Apartments. One member asked if the Library could remove the sign at the Palmer Ave/Weaver Street park now that the fundraiser is completed. The meeting was adjourned at 10:45 am. Attached are price estimates from Shemin Nurseries and Roth Nurseries. The next scheduled meeting is Tuesday April 12, 1994 at 9:30 am in Conference Room A.
