The meeting commenced at 9:30 A.M. T60r T- --
Sue Ellen Commender and Joan Williams phoned in advance to advise that they
would be unable to attend.
Miriam Yekutiel, who had been invited at Phyllis Wittner's request, made a
presentation explaining her ideas for renovation of the two lower islands on Murray
Avenue (these are the first two islands on Murray Avenue reached from Myrtle Blvd.).
Grass and trees are presently planted there. Ms. Yekutiel did not have a sketch of her
plans but explained that after the removal of old soil and the addition of new soil and
compost plus fertilizer, she would recommend the planting of the following: shade-tolerant
taxus circling each tree, Flower Carpet roses in the center of each island, annuals (perhaps
snapdragon and dwarf cosmos) encircling the island with a ground cover of lamiastro
(sp.?) running outside the annuals but inside the curb along the entire perimeter of the
island. If desired, ornamental grasses could be included. Her estimate of the cost of
plantings totaled $1,964. The cost of her services is estimated at $4,560 (5 laborers at
$1,040 a day for 4 days). She indicated that much of the estimated time would be devoted
to preparing the soil prior to planting.
There were many questions asked by Committee members seeking clarification and
questioning the appropriateness and the quantity of the plant selections. Ms. Yekutiel was
asked to submit a translated copy of her estimate since the one submitted was in Hebrew.
After Ms. Yekutiel was thanked for her presentation and she departed, the Committee
carried on a further discussion to decide whether the Beautification Committee wanted to
pursue renovation of these islands. In summary, it was decided that the Beautification
Committee would begin discussions early next Fall to gather ideas for renovation of these
two islands as well as the other two islands up the street on Murray. It was thought that
any renovation of the lower islands should mirror or complement the upper islands and
may therefore require some changes to the upper islands. In the Fall, the Beautification
Committee will then ask local landscapers/designers for estimates in order to secure com-
petitive pricing. It was generally agreed that Ms. Yekutiel's price for labor seemed
excessive.
In the interim, as long as new curbing is being installed on these two islands, the
Beautification Committee suggested that the islands be seeded with annual rye grass after
some new soil and compost is added. It was mentioned that Scarsdale is making their
compost available for the taking. If the Town doesn't have a source of compost, it may
want to check with Scarsdale.
The Beautification Committee agreed that they would like reassurance from the
Town with respect to maintenance of current and future projects (watering and weeding)
before proceeding with any new projects.
The new item on the agenda was the selection of annuals for three locations. The
recommendations are:
Forest Ave. island-impatiens in mixed colors of white and coral are to be planted at
each end.
2 Murray Avenue islands-Nasturtium in mixed colors are to be planted at each end.
Palmer Ave./Weaver St. Park-below is a sketch for placement of pink cleome, blue
salvia and dusty miller.

In addition, it was suggested that, if tulips are to be planted in the Fall at the
Palmer Ave./Weaver St. Park, a color combination of purple and pink be considered. The
Fenimore Road entrance to Winged Foot currently has a tulip bed with this combination
which is very striking and elegant.
Several suggestions were also made:
---Seton Road island is in need of repair due to construction damage(WJWW
promised reimbursement by the contractor but the Town should initiate repair and
replacement of damaged shrubs if this is going to be done in the near future).
---Tree support straps should be removed from trees on the property of the
Hommocks Park Apartments before they do damage to the trees.
---Trash and debris is accumulating along the Vine Street sidewalk and should be
cleaned up.
---Tire tracks should be filled in on the island at No. Chatsworth Avenue and
Myrtle Blvd.
---Tree support straps should be removed from the tree on Murray Avenue island
and from any Town trees that were planted more than a year ago.
---Remove white poles from ground at intersection of Murray and Edgewood Ave.
---Refinish bench at Weaver St./Palmer Ave. Park
The meeting adjourned at 11A.M.
