672.17 Savings
M 2253.80
The speaker for the evening was Anne Deware, Drug and Alcohol Program Coordinator
at Mamaroneck High school:
She distributed a leaflet describing programs in the High School - an Insight
Group (education) ; Concerned Persons Groups (friends or relatives) ; Intervention
Group (heavy users) ; Recovery Support Group (kids in AA and other programs).
There are a lot of kids who want to help others, and she is finding that several
with problems have voluntarily come to her office. Lee Korchin
said that Deware's letter to parents was excellent. Though parents' ed. is
important, Deware is mainly concerned with being there especially for the
kids at this time, so they will feel comfortable with her and her staff.
Eventually she plans to train kids to be peer counselors and also to help
educate the younger grades.
She finds this community very committedto controlling substance abuse. Sport
programs will have participants sign a pledge not to take drugs. Other
extra-curricular activities may follow.
When asked if there is a way to identify those susceptible to becoming
abusers, or way of identifying them, she said there were guidelines, but
care must be taken not to accuse wrongfully. Heredity is a factor; Change
in behavior and appearance and grades for the worse is a signal that some-
thing is amiss.
Ten staff members will be trained at the Maxwell Institute, to help with her
program. They come from various departments of MHS. Eventually there
should be professionalsto help run parents' groups.
Deware's department has excellent rapport with the youth officers.
