BOX 416, LARCHMONT, NY 10538 Minutes. of CFY meetings_ March 12, 1987, 8: 00 p_m. Present: John Barrett , Betty McSherry, Ruth Santos, Richard Stevenson , Bob Reynolds, Bill Reilly, Nancy Sahlein , Lee Korchin , Judith Rozner , Brigitte Dickinson , Sue Greenhill , Steve Chapin , Judy Delehanty. The meeting was called to order by Nancy Sahlein. ANNOUNCEMENTS: Larchmont Village Recreation Dept. is looking for counselors for the summer Flint Park program. Interested students, age 16 and over , should go to the Village Hall , or contact Betty McSherry. 20 counselors are needed , for swing shift and work with children. Someone from CFY should be sent to the planning session for the Village of Mamaroneck 300th anniversary celebration of the Constitution. Bob Reynolds, Town of Mamaroneck Youth Officer , volunteered. JUDITH ROZNER DESCRIBED HER WORK AT MAMARONECK HIGH SCHOOL: 1 . EXCEL (Exploring Careers through Experimental Living) Students with learning disabilities or emotional problems are participants. One is a junior , and the rest are seniors. The are placed in jobs in the community , usually for ten week periods, though in some cases a student has been so successful in one post that the period is extended. Permanent employment sometimes results. Students get paid for time exceeding the school day. Students are asked what their interests are, and are matched to jobs accordingly. There are field trips to job sights. There is a lot of counseling and support . The degree of helpfulness of the people in the work place is more important than the type of work . Although this program includes potential dropouts, most of the students graduate from high school . 2. UNDERSTANLDING HANDICAPS: Fourth grades students in the Mamaroneck School system are participating in a program that helps them to understand handicapped people. They role play being handicapped , see films, and hear handicapped speakers. The speakers receive 35 dollars. The current topic is blindness. Two or three topics may be covered next year if the first program goes well . The PTA has provided volunteers. Six are needed for each school . Judith is working with Vivian Freeman to find jobs for the developmentally disabled. OTHER ANNOUNCEMENTS: Volunteer Services Bureau may start respite care for people with children under five who are in constant need of supervision. Students may possibly be able to help out if the parent remains in the house. Hockey parents are meeting March 19 to discuss making a permanent facility where the skating bubble is. People have suggested erecting a building which would have skating downstairs and a youth lounge upstairs. This would cost over three million dollars, so would have to be voted on. Bill Reilly has been conducting workshops on substance abuse. He also asked kids what they would like the Town to provide. They wondered if the Senior bus could be used on Friday and Saturday evenings to transport them, for a fee. It was felt that this is an excellent idea, which the students should pursue. Since they are only 13 or 14, adult help will probably be needed. The next meeting is April 9, 8: 00 p. m. Assemblyman Ron Tocci will be there. The meeting was adjourned 9: 00 p. m.
