NEXT MEETING: February 25 40%0%0 'l,
minutes of CFY meeting, January 20, 1988, 8:00 p.m., Village Center !-.f lgal
z.
The meeting was called to order by co-chairperson, Nancy Sahlein, at 8:05 p.;a.
Attending were: Judy Call, Eleanor Dreyfus, Fran Kennish, Barbara Pearson,
Bill Reilly, Anne Martin, Susan Vieser, Ruth Santos, and John Barrett.
The Treasurer's report was postponed. Correction to last month's minutes to
show that the speaker at the December 3 meeting was George Cohen, not
Charles Cohen.
In discussion of the Dec. 3 meeting, combined with the mHS PTSA where .wedheard
mr. Cohen, Human Relations Specialist for White Plains 1ublic Schools, discuss
the problems facing the youth of today, we agreed on the importance of the
home environment and = , . parents as role models.
Nancy Sahlein informed us that there have been several meetings of represent-
atives from the three municipalities and the Board of Education to plan for
irthe youth of our community. They received information on how the Town of Rye
has organized its youth-oriented activities and about the job of the Youth
Advocate.
Anne Martin reported as delegate from MHS Senior Class on changes this year
in scheduling. The Senior Class Dinner will now be on Tuesday, June 22,
with graduation on Wednesday, June 23 and the Prom on Thursday, June 24.
Bill Reilly spoke about the difficulties that Oasis has had with bringing the
different groups in the high school together. Despite the opening night
success, kids did not return. He reported that Benita ..arks said they will
consider opening again next year when a new group of 9th graders arrive
who don't have a negative association. Possibly we need a multi-use area
that could be used by seniors and kids. It was pointed out that it is part
of the curriculum in Rye to perform community service for a certain number
of hours per week.
Judy Call said that at least 50 responses came in from the Hommocks SAFE
Homes Back to School night effort. It was decided to take all names of 10th
grade and older families off the list and to print a separate list for 7th
& 8th graders, sent to their homes with a cover letter explaining the mean-
ing of the list and emphasizing parental involvement in the problem.
Nancy Sahlein asked our thoughts on the future of Families Together. It was
decided that the next issue would be printed in the fall, using the summer to
irgather staff and anticipating introduction of Oasis as information for the
first issue.

Bill Reilly expressed concern about the need to identify elderly who are
home-bound, especially on snow days. Perhaps high school kids could call
these people at night to check up. Some schools have an Adopt-a-Grandparent
program. Information on the elderly could be obtained from schools, houses of
worship, and People Meeting People. Bill mentioned Project Share, where
young people who are working and need housing live with elderly people in
their home until they get their resources together, benefiting both groups.
Nancy Sahlein is working with teachers who are faced with severe illness
or death in their classroom. If anyone has knowledge of a situation of
this, please let Nancy know.
We will consider the need for a SAFE Homes list for each school of children
with working parents who are home after school.
People e.eeting People will meet on January 28 and will discuss the topic
AIDS.
Larch.ment Beth Emeth will have a dinner for the homeless on February 11.
meeting was adjourned at 9:00 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Susan Vieser, Secretary
