Present: Town of Mamaroneck: Cora Rust, Chair; Sheila Crain; Mary McDonald; Lee Bloom; Judie Martin; Helga Bendix; and; Kathleen Tracy O'Flynn (Town Board Liaison) Village of Mamaroneck: Andrea Potash, Chair; R. Sid Albert, Marie McKnight This joint meeting of the Human Rights Commissions focused on a review of the January 18th Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration, and the process involved in granting the first awarded in memory of former commissioner, Peter Fousek. Mary McDonald expressed her appreciation for having been selected to receive an award,and shared various positive reactions. The consensus was that the program went well. Included in the discussion of the program were the following: 1. The program should remain at the Emelin Theatre. The proposed date for next year's program, January 16, 1991 has to be cleared with Director Norman Klein. An ancillary room should also be reserved for a possible (:: overflow crowd. 2. The wish to continue and broaden school and community participation in the program signals the need for a coordinator/director/producer. 3. While students have participated willingly and enthusiastically in the program, there is the need to focus them on refining their performances. 4. The theme and format for next year's MLK, Jr.celebration should be proposed in April or May. 5. The letter and press release announcing the program and requesting nominations for the MLK, Jr. award should be drafted in the Spring and mailed in October. 6. The MLK, Jr. awards committee should consist of six commissioners: the Chairperson of the Human Rights Commission. of each of the three municipalities and one additional member from each commission. 7. Publicity for the program will include an announcement in the Westchester calendar of African American History Month Celebrations. 8. A request for program funds will again be made of the New York State Martin Luther King, Jr. Foundation. 9. Jose de Lasa, Chair of the Village of Larchmont Human Rights Commission has offered to once again send "thank you" letters to the program participants. Lee Bloom will send a similar letter to reporter Andrew Skerritt of the Daily Times. February 26, 1990 Page 2 0_ 10. Andrea Potash, Chair of the Village of Mamaroneck Human Rights Commission, has offered to share some of the expense of the January 18th 440". program. 11. A plaque listing the names of the Martin Luther King, Jr. awardees will be permanently installed at the Town Center with a ceremony planned for April. Other discussion items included a report by Cora Rust and Sheila Crain on their attendance at the January conference of the New York State Association of local Human Rights Commissions at which a presentation on Aids was given. There is to be no discrimination against persons so affected. At the conference a keynote address was also given on the state of the homeless in Westchester, and a draft of the Civil Rights Act of 1990 was distributed at the business meeting. A decision was made that the Education Sub-committee should meet because the retirement of two school administrators has been announced. The meeting was adjourned. Respec fully sue itted, Helga Bendix
