This joint meeting of the Human Rights Commissions focused on a review of
the January 18th Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration, and the process
involved in granting the first awarded in memory of former commissioner,
Peter Fousek. Mary McDonald expressed her appreciation for having been
selected to receive an award, and shared various positive reactions.
The consensus was that the program went well. Included in the discussion
of the program were the following:
1. The program should remain at the Emelin Theatre. The proposed date
for next year's program, January 16, 1991 has to be cleared with Director
Norman Klein. An ancillary room should also be reserved for a possible
(:: overflow crowd.
2. The wish to continue and broaden school and community participation
in the program signals the need for a coordinator/director/producer.
3. While students have participated willingly and enthusiastically in
the program, there is the need to focus them on refining their
performances.
4. The theme and format for next year's MLK, Jr.celebration should be
proposed in April or May.
5. The letter and press release announcing the program and requesting
nominations for the MLK, Jr. award should be drafted in the Spring and
mailed in October.
6. The MLK, Jr. awards committee should consist of six commissioners:
the Chairperson of the Human Rights Commission. of each of the three
municipalities and one additional member from each commission.
7. Publicity for the program will include an announcement in the
Westchester calendar of African American History Month Celebrations.
8. A request for program funds will again be made of the New York State
Martin Luther King, Jr. Foundation.
9. Jose de Lasa, Chair of the Village of Larchmont Human Rights
Commission has offered to once again send "thank you" letters to the
program participants. Lee Bloom will send a similar letter to reporter
Andrew Skerritt of the Daily Times.

440". program.
11. A plaque listing the names of the Martin Luther King, Jr. awardees
will be permanently installed at the Town Center with a ceremony planned
for April.
Other discussion items included a report by Cora Rust and Sheila Crain on
their attendance at the January conference of the New York State
Association of local Human Rights Commissions at which a presentation on
Aids was given. There is to be no discrimination against persons so
affected. At the conference a keynote address was also given on the state
of the homeless in Westchester, and a draft of the Civil Rights Act of
1990 was distributed at the business meeting.
A decision was made that the Education Sub-committee should meet because
the retirement of two school administrators has been announced.
The meeting was adjourned.
Respec fully sue itted,
Helga Bendix
