Carpaneto, Director of Building CALL TO ORDER Acting Chairman Jacobson called the meeting to order at 8:00 PM. ePPWIVAL nF "MINUTE Minutes of the January 27, 2005 meeting were not approved at this time. All members were not present to vote. Mr. Jacobson read the applications as follows: • NAIL HOUSE- 1262 Boston Post Road-Block 407, Lot 192-signs (adjourned 12/16/04,01/27/05) The applicant, Myong Kim, approached the Board and explained the application. After discussion regarding the two signs (one on the store front, one on the directory)the Board had the following comments: 1. The typeface for the directory sign was acceptable. 2. The new lettering for the main sign was also acceptable. The Board found this to be much more aesthetically pleasing than the past submission. The Board moved to accept the application with the following conditions: 1. The Nail House main sign is approved with no internal illumination. 2. The Grand Opening sign must be removed. 3. Paper signs in the window must be removed. On a motion made and seconded, the following resolution was ADOPTED: WHEREAS,the Nail House has submitted an application to the Director of Building, together with plans for signs; and WHEREAS, the Director of Building has declined to issue such permit on the grounds that the review by the Board of Architectural Review is required; and • WHEREAS,the Nail House submitted an application for approval to the Board; and WHEREAS,this Board has examined the plans, inspected the site, reviewed the application and has heard all persons interested in this application; and Board of Architectural Review February 17, 2005 Page 2 • NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the subject application be and the same is GRANTED, subject to the following conditions: 1. The Nail House main sign is approved with no internal illumination. 2. The Grand Opening sign must be removed. 3. Paper signs in the window must be removed. ALICE'S INTERNATIONAL BEAUTY SALON - 168-170 Myrtle Blvd. - Block 133, Lot 657 Sign (adjourned 12/16/04,01/27/05) The applicant, Mr. Pedro Mendez, approached the Board and explained the application. After some discussion regarding typeface and letter sizes the Board approved the application with the following conditions: 1. The Alice's logo on the window must be removed. 2. The phone number on the door should be relocated under the Unisex Hair Salon sign on the window. 3. On the awning "Alice's International Beauty Salon" should be set on two lines. "Alice's"typeface is to be 5 inches in height. "The International Beauty Salon" typeface should be 4 inches in height and the space between the two lines must • be reduced. Board of Architectural Review February 17, 2005 Page 3 • MERCEDES BENZ OF LARCHMONT-2500 Boston Post Road - Block 503, Lot 123 facade, site (adjourned 12/16/04,01/27/05) The applicant, Joseph Crocco, approached the Board and explained the application. He explained the changes to the glazing division layout, the graphics, signage, site lighting levels and landscaping design. The Board had the made the following comments: 1. The glazing design has definitely improved in "comparison to the last submission". 2. The signage placement and typeface for"Mercedes of Larchmont" has also improved and is acceptable. 3. Because internally illuminated signage is not acceptable, the Board recommended silhouette lighting as an alternative. 4. The Mercedes symbol placement is acceptable to this Board. The Board is aware that a zoning variance is required and will endorse the required area variance by the Zoning Board of Appeals. Note: The Mercedes logo on the pylon will not be i iyii 5. The site lighting has been reduced to acceptable levels. 6. The landscaping in general was acceptable but the following changes were recommended by the Board and accepted by the applicant. A weeping cherry tree should be placed in the foreground in the area in front of the pylon. The Board felt that the pylon was a good feature and the weeping cherry would not"hide"the pylon. This area should also be planted with boxwoods and ground cover. A different walking surface should be installed in the area of the main door at the • service area. The applicant suggested cobblestone, the Board agreed. The monument sign from the prior occupant should be removed and the area filled with approved plantings. On a motion made and seconded, the following resolution was ADOPTED: WHEREAS, Mercedes Benz has submitted an application to the Director of Building,together with plans facade and site plan; and WHEREAS, the Director of Building has declined to issue such permit on the grounds that the review by the Board of Architectural Review is required; and WHEREAS, Mercedes Benz submitted an application for approval to the Board; and WHEREAS,this Board has examined the plans, inspected the site, reviewed the application and has heard all persons interested in this application; and NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the subject application be and the same is GRANTED, subject to the following conditions: 1. The applicant must make an application to the Zoning Board for the Mercedes Logo. 2. Back lighting the Mercedes sign is acceptable. • 3. A weeping cherry is to be placed in the fore ground of the pylon. This area is to be planted with boxwoods and ground cover. 4. A cobblestone-walking surface will be added at the main door of the service area. Board of Architectural Review February 17, 2005 Page 4 • 5. The monument sign from the former occupant must be removed and the area filled with approved plantings for the area. CHEN'S KITCHEN -2423 Boston Post Road - Block505, Lot 463-sign The applicant, Jin Jiang, and George Poline, interperter for applicant, approached the Board and explained the application. The Board made the following comments: 1. The sign cannot be internally illuminated. 2. Phone numbers are to be removed from the sign as well as Chinese Food Takeout. They should be placed on the window. 3. The typeface for Chen's Kitchen should be larger. The Board did not approve the application and suggested that the applicant submit new material for the March meeting. NEW BUSINESS The Board would like to thank Judy Meyers for her years of service and dedication to the Board of Architectural Review, and wishes her good luck in her new endeavor as County Legislator. • The Board will contact the Supervisor regarding selecting a new member and a chairperson for the Board and also for clarification of the Planning Boards decision on the approval of the Commerce Bank sign. NEXT MEETING The next meeting of the BAR will be held on March 17, 2005. ADJOURNMENT Upon a motion duly made and seconded, the meeting was unanimously adjourned.
