THE TOWN OF MAMARONECK, HELD IN THE OFFICE OF THE
SUPERVISOR, 158 WEST BOSTON POST ROAD, VILLAGE OF
MAMARONECK, MAMARONECK, NEW YORK, APRIL 4, 1960.
CALL TO ORDER
The Supervisor called the meeting to order at 6:30 p.m. , pre-
senting a notice of the meeting and waiver thereof, which was
ordered received and filed,
PRESENT; Supervisor Burchell
Councilman Santoro
Councilman Kane
Councilman Brush
Councilwoman Helwig
ABSENT: None
ALSO PRESENT: Mr. Delius - Town Attorney
NEW HAVEN RAILROAD
Councilwoman Helwig reported that the Supervisor and she had met
with Mrs. Spencer Weart and Mrs, Martin Buck at their request to
discuss the present operation of the New Haven with regard to safety.
She stated that Mrs. Weart and Mrs. Buck were speaking on behalf
of a group of women residents who were greatly concerned about
their husbands' safety while commuting, and who had requested that
the Board act on this matter, requesting the proper authorities to
investigate and take such action as necessary to insure the railroad's
safe operation.
Whereupon following some further discussion, on motion by Council-
woman Helwig and seconded by Councilman Brush, the following res-
olution was adopted unanimously and the Town Attorney directed to
present same to the Public Service Commission at the hearing on
the New Haven to be held on Wednesday, April 6th.
WHEREAS, recent testimony given before both the Public
Utilities Commission of Connecticut and the Public Ser-
vice Commission of New York has raised serious and sub-
stantial questions as to standards of safety being used in
the operation of the New Haven Railroad,
and
WHEREAS, the recent series of breakdowns and operat-
ing failures on the New Haven resulting in serious per-
sonal injury, inconvenience and delay to its passengers
and general disruption of commuter service gives ample
reason to believe that these questions as to the standards
of safety are not unfounded,
and
WHEREAS, the Town Board of the Town of Mamaro-
neck is deeply concerned with the continued safe op-
eration of this railroad and for the safety and con-
venience of its residents who must travel daily on it
to and from their place of livelihood,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT
RESOLVED that the Board urges the Public Service
-- Commission of the State of New York to use the full
powers of its office to investigate into the operation
and service of the New Haven for the purpose of in-
suring that standards essential to the safe operating
of the railroad are being maintained for the safety
and convenience of its passengers,
ADJOURNMENT
There being no further business to come before the meeting, it
was declared adjourned at 6;45 p.m.
